I am having the same issue. We are focusing on plano (in particular west plano). The lots are way too small. We have 1.75 acres back home...and I DONT want that (too hard to maintain, nomatter how pretty it is). But I dont want to look outside my window and see my neighbors window!!! I think 1/2 acres is nice. Enough for a front yard and back yard...and room for a future pool, playset/clubhouse and greenspace/or patio(as we entertain). I have looked at flower mound as the schools look great...but are they in the boonies. Says its 25 minutes to the plano area...how to long to the city? Does flower mound have multiple shopping venues--or is it one main street that has everything. Based on the past, we are really looking for an area where it takes 5 minutes to gas, food and drugstores and 10-15 minutes to get to everything else. Dont want the boonies.

You can get to gas, food and drugstore in less than 15 minutes from any direction in FM. For other shopping as in malls, electronics etc, you go to Grapevine Mills or Vista Ridge Mall in Lewisville which again, depending where in FM you end up choosing. You will certainly not be close to Plano. Traffic and the choices of road are not abundant.

If you're gonna be in Plano, consider Prosper, you can get a lot of house fo 400K and large lots but no areas that are heavilly treed. That certainly will put you very close to Plano and the schools are good as well. Lucas, Fairview, Parker are worth considering too.

To OP, how much acreage are you looking for? 1/2 acre or 1, and again, budget is key.

Most of the new areas are not heavily treed as they are on former pastures that got plowed under. Consider the climate, you have to water a tree to get it big and there hasn't been time in newer areas.

Good suggestion. I'd also add parts of Cedar Hill and Grand Prairie around Joe Pool Lake.

Heath could also be an option.

But again, it all goes back to budget.....which OP has not provided.
