Hi mpstat! Also, be sure to check out Dallas Affairs Cake Company in the Lakewood section of Dallas. We've used them for weddings, birthdays and many special events and their cakes have always gotten rave reviews! Their website is: Dallas Affaires Cake Company

Hope that helps.

Daniel

La Duni is OK but there really does seem to be a dearth of good bakeries considering the size of the Metroplex. Haven't been to Rush yet.

Related to this, I'd love to find a good traditional Jewish bakery here. That's one of the (relatively few) things I miss about LA. I'd love to find the equivalent of this place -- Beverlywood Bakery: About As -- here. Their chocolate chip danish will make you abandon whatever dietary god you currently worship.

I am french and I am very picky when it comes to french pastries, bread...

To me, the best place so far for croissants and pains au chocolat is Central Market. La madeleine is average, I think that all they serve is previously frozen.

Wholefoods is not good at croissants or any french pastries. However their pies and other american specialities are good.

Trader Joes sells frozen Pains au chocolat that you can thaw overnight and bake. I did it once, it is good but a little greasy. The taste is close to what you would find in France.

I buy french croissants and pains au chocolat from Cental Market, I then put them in the freezer. They keep extremely well.

To warm them up, I either thaw them a half hour before and pop them in the oven afterwards or directly in the oven at 350 or less.

I can't say much about other pastries because those are the only ones that my kids and I like to eat

Have you tried Empire for croissants?
I actually don't like Rush for croissants - last time I had them, they were glazed inside of egg washed and that seemed like a crime against croissants.

Try this place: The Village Baking Co - Upper Greenville - Dallas, TX

It's on E. University - go east on University from Greenville, RIGHT before the Dart tracks on the right, is the place. It use to be a Whole Foods bakehouse or something like that.

ETA: Not sure what the OP's bakery is like in Atlanta they are trying to match, but this place has croissants :-)
