Can anyone out there (Lakewooder?LOL) give me the background on the faux chateau at the corner of Gaston and W. Shore Drive that is currently for sale..Very interesting property on a gorgeous piece of land, albeit on a very busy corner..TIA.

Thanks..seems to be almost land value at this last reduction as house needs a lot (charitably spoken) of work.

Does it not have AC? It looks pretty nice. Even on the inside. Think of all that land you're getting, plus a cool old house for 795?

it's odd. The square footage when they purchased it in 2005 as a foreclosure was 4100sf, yet now it's 3200sf. The only "chateau" feature about it is the turret. The owner is taking the canons made of stone and all the outside decorations too. It was listed for over 1.3 million for land value only too.

In 1929 when this was built Gaston was a country lane and that (Westshore/White Rock Trail) was the turn-off to go to the lake (built 18 years earlier). In the 40s and 50s Gaston was seen as the 'highway' route to Garland Road, Rylie, points east and Garland so it was widened from dowtown all the way out..later (and coincidentally) R.L. Thornton Freeway relieved some of the traffic..

Behind there was some of the first development of Lakewood - Pasadena, Shook etc..

I'm think the Thorntons lived there until the late 60s. I went to school with their grandson and he lived on Lakewood Blvd. His older sister, Mary Brinegar (Woodrow '65), is president of the Dallas Arboretum.

Story on their parents (Rosemary is the daughter of "Uncle Bob" Thornton: http://www.modbee.com/2008/09/03/416...ecipe-for.html

is that listed in the realtor notes or something? That's too bad as it is a big part of the charm. I am not certain, but I think all of that was there when we moved to our house in 2004.

I do believe the pool and area around it has been completely redone in the past few years.

It's actually 749--I can't decide if it's cool and charming or just a trainwreck! I see about 200 easy going in right off the bat...
