I don't know that I have ever seen a house that had gas service and chose to go with an electric water heater. It's more expensive to operate and the recovery time is significantly longer than a gas water heater.

Many newer homes are also going with Tankless Hot water systems which will be gas.

That's what my home has.

In the 40+ years that I've rented and bought homes in the DFW area, I've always put gas at the top of my 'gotta-have' list. Only twice have I caved and both times regretted it. Gas rules.

When the electricity goes out in cold weather, I have my gas-log fireplace, gas cooktop, and gas water heater, and I'm good.

About 1/2 through page 2 someone mentioned new construction and if you re-read my original response I specifically mentioned new homes.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that homes with electric water heaters and gas heat didn't exist. I don't know why someone would do that, but to each his own.

Older 70's homes were sold as "All Electric" which was a big selling point. That only lasted about 10-15 years.

Sometimes when there is a room above the garage and the HW Heater is in the garage, they might use electric due to ventilation reasons.
That IIRC is only by the cheaper builders and fairly rare the last 20 years.

Note the Electric HWH does not have a flue that goes up through the attic. No need to cut a hole through the ceiling and roof to vent.
This HWH is also not elevated off the floor which would be required for gas. (I believe)
