I've got a couple of threads going about moving to Dallas and I wanted to know how long it's been taking everyone to find a job.

We haven't moved to Dallas yet but are using a Dallas address when applying. My husband has had a few interviews (he's in IT) and I've had a couple too (I'm in contracts admin and marketing), however, we've been at it about 2.5 months and I thought one of us would have something by now. A good friend of mine has been there for 6 months (she's in law) and hasn't found anything yet either, although she's had interviews. Does it take a few months to find something? How long did it take you to find something?

For me, the process was less than two months. Had my first offer within a month of completing undergrad, and finally decided on a job at the Federal Reserve.

Have you tried job fairs?

The job market in Dallas is excellent, but like anywhere else I've realized that networking is key.

No, I haven't tried job fairs. That's definitely an idea. Both my husband and I are mid-level employees with 10-15 years experience in our fields. I definitely agree that we probably should network more.

I found a job here in Dallas 3 months back I work in IT too.

I understand there are some companies who absolutely need to hire local candidates but there are others like my employer who are flexible and do the interview process over video conferencing(skype etc).

Most of the jobs are applied online so they may not know your physical location until a recruiter follows up with you.

As far as IT, I would suggest do a survey of the market by looking at the job portals to see what employers are looking for and try to brush up/upgrade to those skills. If you find a decent match please go ahead and apply.

Any questions please feel free to PM me

IT is not doing well any where now.I know many people into IT can't get jobs.I know many people driving taxi cabs or pizza delivery with computer science degree or IT project management or programmer so on.Problem is the IT way too many got into and there too many people.

If you into business or heathcare you would have better luck.

Always get job before you move there you don't want to be homeless with no job.

It's interesting that you say that as my husband has had more interviews in IT than myself who is in business.

This is far from the truth. There are jobs out there. Unfortunately companies won't hire unless the skills match.
Technology changes by the day. It is very important to keep one's skills up to date with th industry to make sure one is marketable.

I know a few people who are out of jobs in IT. To say the industry is not doing well in DFW area is far from the truth. In fact it is exactly the opposite.

That's my understanding as well. Here's to hoping that we get something before winter. I know by winter that things will start to drop a bit.

I'd say it took me 1-2 months, but I did it while I was living in San Antonio. I interviewed for the job I have now first on the phone and then in an in-person interview I made the 5-hour drive for. I work in IT as a Business Analyst.

Is this based on heavy job searching? I'm sending in anywhere from 5-10 applications a week.
