Me my husband and 3 kids are moving to Dallas area in the spring. We would like some recommendations of small, family friendly, diverse, high achieving elementary schools.
We are an african american family but would like a diverse, welcoming community to live. Any suggestions.
Any thoughts on the following areas?
Red Oak
Desoto
Duncanville
Plano
Denton
Frisco
Allen
Mesquite
Garland
Lakewood
Mansfield
Mckinney
Hickory Creek
Morth Oak Cliff
Junius Heights
Oaklawn
Vally Ranch
Lancaster
Grand Prairie
Lakeridge (Cedarhill)
Preston
Hollow
Flower Mound
Greenville
Any thoughts greatly appraciated.

You might also add some budget guideline. Some of those 'burbs are fairly high dollar, some low dollar. Either of which might drive diversity avenues. And approx work location, commute preferences, house requirements, bedrooms, pool, etc.

Yes, this.

Also, when you post, provide the following:

- location of work (nearby cross streets). Dallas is a huge metroplex, why have an awful commute if you don't have to?
- whether you are renting first or buying.
- The approx. budget for renting or buying. (as Temp mentions)

Help them help you.

The short answer to your post without knowing any of the above, might be Plano/Richardson. Both are "diverse" but maybe not how you define it.

A lot of posters who reply are going to try to steer you to the highlighted communities, since you mentioned you are black. But if you truly want your family to live in a DIVERSE, welcoming community, then pay no mind; most of the people who recommend these areas for you just because you are black wouldn't even live in them themselves. Not knocking them, just saying that you don't HAVE to feel forced to live in them just because you are black when you said yourself that you are looking for a diverse and welcoming community.

The highlighted ones on the list are the most diverse. Frisco is also a good option because its an up and coming where diversity is concerned and the schools are excellent. Also give Carrollton a look. The schools arent as good as Plano, Frisco, Allen, or McKinney, but the diversity level is extremely high.

As others have noted, without knowing roughly where you work and roughly what your budget is, it's almost impossible to give decent recommendations. Your list of 'burbs is literally all over the map (geographically) as well as differing greatly in cost and general "ambiance". For example, Lakewood is an older community close in to downtown Dallas, while Frisco is a much newer and very suburban area, so the "feel" for each is much different.

You need to know your job location first because this seemingly random list of neighborhoods, towns, and suburbs is all over the place: Greenville is a small rural town about an hour east of Dallas. It's not commutable to any job in Dallas, Irving/Las Colinas, Plano (the major job centers). Hickory Creek is in the far northwest corner of the metroplex, while Lancaster and Red Oak are in the far southeast corner.

Traffic is horrible here and many commutes are on expensive tollroads (think up to $10/DAY).

You can find diversity all over the metroplex. Great schools tend to start at $300k houses & up. Small public schools are rare. Because of the way Texas funds education (through a share the wealth system called "Robin Hood"), most of the high achieving (property rich) districts don't have enough money left over (after giving away up to 70% of their tax revenues to poor districts) to have enough teachers and classrooms, causing parents to sign waivers to have more than the state-allowed number of students in each class. If the state limit is 18 kindergarteners, it's not uncommon to have 22-25 students in a class. Then, in some districts like Plano & Allen where the individual class sizes are close to the state limits, the high schools are huge (1000-1500 students per graduating class). The smaller schools and classes are in the lower performing schools where families aren't flocking.
