The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) released its annual population estimates for the area last Thursday. Based on that data, here's how many people each city has gained or lost since the last census in 2000. The list only includes cities that had an estimated population of 5,000+ in 2009. Any thoughts? Do any of the figures come as a surprise to you?

I read in the DMN that Addison's population decline during the past year was due to nine apartment complexes being demolished to make way for a new luxury development. Over the longer term, however, its slow growth is due mainly to it being nearly built-out.

Those numbers aren't quite right. For example, Little Elm's population in 2000 was 3,646. It's now estimated to be 23,350. That's a growth rate of 640%, or 19,704 residents.

The figures in the table aren't the actual populations of the city, just how many people have moved to a particular city since 2000.

Little Elm's 2009 estimated population is 23,350, up from 3,646 in 2000. During the period 2009, the city gained a total of 19,704 people (540.43%). http://www.nctcog.org/ris/demographi...stest_0009.gif

Ok. It's the way the columns are delimited then. The trailing periods leading to the population data for the next column look a little confusing.

Sorry for the confusion. The lists would have been so long that I tried to break it up into columns to save page space. To make it a little easier, I have color-coded the first and third columns in both tables for more clarity. Hope this helps!

Default ??

Just wondering why Alvarado isn't listed. In fact, I rarely see it listed on this kind of NCTCOG info, though, it's in the MSA

You are right that Alvarado is definitely part of the MSA. I made the lists above and didn't intentionally leave Alvarado off of the list. The NCTCOG population estimates data covers a 16-county area, so for the sake of space, I didn't include every city.

Here are the NCTCOG numbers for Alvarado:

2000 Census Population: 3,288
2009 Population Estimate: 3,950

Numerical Population Increase 2000-2009: 662
Population Growth Rate 2000-2009: 20.1%

I hope this is helpful to you. If there is any other community that may have been left off the earlier list that you would like to know about, I gladly post those stats as well.
