I may be accepting a sales position in Dallas and would have to move from Austin- I love Austin but need some career advancement. I am trying very hard not to have an opinion about living in Dallas although it creeps in occasionally. the only time I've been mugged was in Dallas but I was much younger.

Anyway, my question is thus:

1) What is a good area with highly appreciating home values ( I might not stay longer than 5 years) under $250K. My wife is an Artist, so I need an art scene of some kind. Hmmm. the place I am describing seems like Austin, no?

I will be working from home mostly but would need to meet with clients downtown, so no daily commute necessary but air travel may be common.

I guess is there any part of Dallas that might resemble Austin?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Look east! The neighborhoods of Lakewood, Little Forest Hills, M-Streets, and Lower Greenville all have an Austin-type vibe. Or I should say, Austin has an East Dallas vibe. Look in the 75214 and 75206 zip codes.

Try North Oak Cliff. Neighborhoods like Winnetka Heights near the Bishop Arts District may have the character and urban diversity that I'm guessing you'd like.

Plus, you'd be a 10 minute drive to downtown Dallas. Or take plentiful public transportation.

BTW, I haven't had my Dallas mugging yet... I tremble with fear knowing that it's probably way overdue. Maybe I should move to Austin and avoid it altogether.

I've never spent any real time in Austin to know what "vibe" it has, I only make the dreadful drive through it on my way to San Antonio. Anyways back to the subject you may want to try the Bishop Arts district in North Oak Cliff, or head to East Dallas neighborhoods like Little Forrest Hills, which conicidentally I live near and am putting up our house on the market. Good luck Dallas is a cool city I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Having lived in both places, East Dallas is like most of older Austin and North Oak Cliff is like Travis Heights. You'll find an Austin vibe in either.

Junius Heights Junius Heights Neighborhood Blog » Historic Neighborhood Information and Little Forest Hills in East Dallas - or you might call it "Greater Lakewood". $250K might take a little looking (try 75214, 75206, 75218) but it will be worth it - double to triple the appreciation rates of nearly all of DFW. Also research Lower Greenville, MStreets, Deep Elllum, Expo Park, Fair Park for some info about the area.
