Hi everyone, we will have a Jewish guest coming in this weekend.

I am preparing for the food menu now. I only know they can not eat pork.

What else should I avoid? Can they eat meat I buy from supermarkets like Kroger?

I want to cook chicken, prawn, fish, beef, ratatouille, scallop, and garlic lobster.

Can they eat sea food? Any particular thing I need to pay attention to?

I want every guest to have a guaranteed good time.

Advice please!

Thanks in advance.

If your guests don't keep Kosher, they can eat whatever you eat.

I believe, that besides pork, many Jewish folks do not eat water bottom feeders, such as prawn, scallops, and lobster.

Did you ask your Jewish Guest/guests if they follow Kosher diet? That would make your menu much easier to plan. If they are not a strict Kosher follower..then maybe just ask what they prefer? In the meantime..there are pages and pages on Kosher diet rules which can assist you.. Google is your best friend at moments like this

I do commend you tho for being such a considerate "Host"

If we are having any Jewish, Moslem, Hindu or health conscious guest then we email ahead and ask for any dietary restrictions they may follow, as some do and others don't really care so no point in going through unnecessary trouble.

There is a world of knowledge online to understand rules of faith/health or choice restricted diets.

If your Jewish guests keep kosher, they cannot:
  • Eat meat from Kroger
  • Eat shellfish of any kind
  • Other types of fish and game are also off-limits
  • And so on and so on and so on

Best advice? Ask THEM to what extent, if any, do they observe kashrut.

You could also serve a completely vegetarian meal. (When in doubt.)

If all they told you was they don't eat pork, then they do not keep kosher, otherwise they also would have told you they don't eat shellfish and dairy products must be on a completely different plate than the meats and different silverware would also need to be used as they cannot mix.

People who keep kosher would definitely tell you as it's not something that slips their minds.

Not necessarily. As a Jew, I know many many other Jews. Some will happily eat a cheeseburger but some of those same people would recoil in horror at pepperoni on a pizza. Others will eat bacon but not jello or marshmallows.

Keeping kosher isn't a binary thing. It's a spectrum.

BEST advice is ASK THE GUESTS.

And if you went to someone's house knowing they were going to order a pizza, you would be sure to tell them you don't want pepperoni. I'm Jewish also, and my friends are all different. The people who care about what they eat will say something. I always say I don't eat pork or seafood when people ask my preference. I love my cheeseburgers, and I don't consider bacon as pork. Bacon is bacon.

My point is that people will tell you if they have a dietary need. If they don't tell you, they will probably eat whatever you put in front of them. People with allergies always say their allergy. It's the same thing.
