We're both in our early thirties and will be working at UNT. Not concerned with school districts we do not have children. We want to live somewhere that:

1) the commute isn't horrendous
2) is more city than country

Any suggestions?

Denton will be the best option for you so you don't have a horrible commute. It's not a small town anymore! The only other option would be Fort Worth, but that would be a long drive...

Thank you for your reply. We love Denton and it's an option but we're looking at other places too. We'll be renting before buying a home and apartments are mostly rented by college aged and that worries us. At least what colleagues are saying since the university is growing so much.

Would Highland Village, TX to Denton be a bad commute?

It would be all back roads, and I35E is a reconstruction mess for the foreseeable future.

Our son and DIL live in Denton...bought house soon after marriage about 3 yrs ago.
He did BA and MA at UNT and had friends there...she was from NC and going to TCU grad program so not that familair with area when they met...dropped out of program due to illness before they married so had no ties. He thought he got better deal since only 1 income at that time buying in Denton--market wasn't as hot as Dallas...
They want to move to Dallas/Richardson because they are both working at same company now and commute kills her...plus she thinks Denton is not as great at Dallas... but Denton has improved a great deal in past 5-7 yrs... some really good local restaurants and bars--local music...shopping is still the pits and other things like upscale spa/nail/hair salons... money isn't there to support lot of upscale shopping/facilities
There is kind of war between the hippy-dippy perinial student types and more yuppie, up-scale crowds that are moving in to live/work there and not just go to college...

There are rental homes in Denton and you might have more luck with that market than apts...
you might also consider around Roanoke-- that area has gone through some commercialization....nice restaurant district... you can go up 35 or 377 which is not freeway
depends on what your hours are---going north is against the traffic but it can be crowded until after past the speedway

Our son also lived off I-35 east around Vista Ridge mall at one point -- couldn't afford much rent and apt was older, sleezy neighbors--car was stolen from apt lot at one point...
but there are some nicer ones in the area... don't know about I35 going north from there
but the area is definitely city...

You can also try living near one of the A-Train stations, and use the train and a short bus from the Denton station to get a nice, easy, stress free commute. The A-train from its southernmost station to UNT takes about an hour, including the wait and transfer to the bus.

The Vista Ridge area where our son lived in that apt had a bus link to Denton that was resonably close to their apt---his girlfriend at the time would use it sometimes since she worked at UNT in registrar's office (I think) and got some kind of reduced rate...
but the times aren't the best and there is not lot of flexibility...plus weather can be hassle...
and my son when he bought that house had good intentions of using train and bus to get to his job in Dallas but it was not an easy commute even after he made it to the terminal by AA Center...

If you can find something that gets you there with only 1 transfer, you are still at the mercy of their timeline...

UNT has site that lets you find ride-share...if you are working or going to class on different schedule from your spouse, then you might try that...plenty of people in Dallas area go to Denton/TWU/UNT...
