I know St. Augustine and Bermuda grasses are big in this area but my husband is looking for an alternative besides Zoysia. One of the houses in our neighborhood has a great lawn, which doesn't turn brown, and has looked beautiful since we've been here in Oct. It's a rather fine blade and seems to be shade tolerant (which is good because we have two big shade trees). Any idea what this could be? Don't know these neighbors and have never met them - might feel weird leaving a note for them in their mailbox!

Have you thought about native grasses?

There are a few grass places here in town such as A-1 Grass in Plano that can help with that. They sell the sod to the builders and homeowners. There is not just one Bermuda.

Some of the native grasses look ok but I suspect you've seen a variant of a Bermuda that's well watered and fertilized. Or a winter Rye that's still hanging on?

I'd be hard pressed if it's winter rye.

Probably winter rye. A lot of people over seed with this for the winter months.

You should be a bit careful about what grass you plant, especially in your front yard. Many north Texas cities have regulations concerning what types of grass you can plant in your yard, and if they notice an unapproved one, they will request you pull it out. Make sure you are ok with fighting the city if you want something that is not approved.

Thanks to all who responded. My husband went over with a landscaping guy and it is some winter rye grass. We will check out A-!, thanks. Still looking for weekly lawn service. Any suggestions, pls. PM me! Wondering if Plano has grass regulations. One of our neighbors has turf so I doubt it - kind of surprising because they seem to be a decent HOA. Maybe nobody has noticed??

I haven't seen any grass regulations in Plano besides the watering restrictions... What do you mean your neighbor has turf? Are you talking about the plastic stuff?

Most HOA's have a law that says you cant put it down but he could have always gotten a waver. If it looks nice i wouldn't press the issue..
