You don't really need a toll tag if you don't want one. They will just send you the bill every month in mail. That is just how it works here. You are not running tolls if you go through tolls here. Unlike other places, they have cash, ez pass and exact change lanes which you won't find here.

If you decide to get the Toll Tag. There is one for North Texas and the other one you can use all over Texas. I got the North Texas one which is a T in an orange circle.

Can someone tell me why every few months I get a $40 toll bill from the NTTA even though I don't think I used $40 worth of tolls?

"TollTag accounts may be maintained and replenished by credit, cash or check. Credit accounts that fall to $10 or less will be replenished by an automatic charge of $40 to the credit card on file."

You save about 30-40% on the cost of tolls if you have a toll tag.

All texas toll tags are interchangeable on texas toll roads, They are just managed by different agencies. EZTag originated out of Houston, NTTA is north Texas, and TXTag out of austin. all can be used in North Texas.

Also, as another user said, you get a reduced fee by using a toll tag instead of waiting for a paper bill in the mail. Unless you don't want to maintain an account with NTTA and save your bank or credit card info, you should absolutely get a toll tag for the cost savings.

The toll tags also work for going to and from airport parking and also work on Oklahoma toll roads.

If you live in Dallas, you want the NTTA tag. It's also cheaper and more streamlined to have an account and a tag than to get billed.

Other tags work--sorta. They don't mesh well behind the scenes and the billing system can break down. I initially got the "wrong tag" when I first moved to Dallas not realizing it made a difference. I didn't realize why, for instance, the DFW airport system appeared to recognize my toll tag...but demanded my credit card anyway.

When there was a problem, it was impossible to resolve it online or by phone--I had to set appointments and drive to the office to work out what were really cracks between the two systems.

So now I have an account with NTTA and I maintain a minimum balance in that account. Maybe NTTA just has their act together better. But now I never give a thought to it, other than noting the account each month. If someone was a heavy commuter so that the tolls were a significant expense, it would mean budgeting for that account--but that would be a matter like paying the electric bill each month. We don't worry about it when we flick the light switch.
