We are moving to Dallas area next summer, and I want to make the best decision I can about where to live. We have two little kids, the oldest will be going into first grade.

We found lots of apartments withing our budget. Our "apartment finder" person suggested Frisco, Plano, Highland Park, and a few other areas. Job in Dallas...commute...he has to drive, not me!! haha No more than 40 minutes I guess. Thanks for responding!! It is hard to move someone and know nothing about the area!!

You have to really think long and hard about living downtown if you have kids in the public schools. Do your school research. Highland Park and University Park have its own school district called Highland Park ISD which is excellent (course, it's almost 100% white high income families), but some of the places in those areas may carry a University Park address but not be within the Highland Park school district. They are in Dallas ISD (school district). When considering Dallas ISD you have to look at and research specific schools as the quality of Dallas schools are all over the place.

Are you wanting to be in an older or newer area. Also, when you said Dallas for your husbands job, what area did you mean(downtown Dallas, North Dallas,etc.)?
There is not many apartments in Highland Park, but a lot very close by. I know that there is Archstone, which is pretty nice. Highland Park Schools are top notch. From here, you could be anywhere in Dallas in less than 40 minutes in rush hour.
Frisco and Plano both have many different apartment complexes. They vary from upscale to just average. Most of them are new and in very family-oriented, safe areas. The schools are good too. From this area, downtown Dallas and North Dallas would all be within 40 minutes.

I agree, downtown and uptown are not very suitable neighborhoods for children. The Dallas schools down there are also pretty bad.

There area some affordable apartments with stable tenants just south of Lover's Lane between Greenville and Skillman in the Exemplary, Blue-Ribbon Stonewall Jackson Elementary district. Three DART rail stations in the area and a free shuttle bus. You would be located between the Park Cities/SMU and Lakewood/White Rock Lake about 10 minutes from downtown. See Birchbrook, E. University, Amesbury, Milton streets etc.
