Hi everyone!

I just accepted a nursing position at BUMC and will be driving from Boston in early January. Unfortunately I can't afford to fly out and search for an apartment because I broke the bank graduating from college
Are there any reasonably priced communities that you would recommend? All I can seem to find are luxury studio apartments, but honestly I'm a bare necessities person who really doesn't need to live in a gated community. It would be great to live close to BUMC, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

The Ambrose is a short walk a way. Here's a recent chat starting around page 3.
Is Oak Lawn a safe neighborhood???

I would suggest you find someplace that you can rent for a few weeks or months when you get here then check out the neighborhoods to decide. There are lots of places that will rent on a month to month basis. The area in the immediate vicinity of BUMC is most like the Boston Medical Center area - ok but a little sketchy. I would suggest you get a first hand feel about it before you commit, but they are building nice stuff around BUMC and getting rid of the junk real fast. I sense a buyers opportunity for sure. Just a bit further down the road you can do high rise living is Dallas's downtown for a song. It's ok, just don't expect Main Street to equal Boylston and do expect a higher zombie to human ratio due to a bizarrre lack of pedestrianism. There are two neighborhoods in a short drive away one called Lakewood and another called uptown. Uptown is kinda Brooklineish with a bit of Allston wildness. Lakewood is sorta like the west side of Brookline.

Thanks for the response, Bostonian08. I'm looking in Lakewood, uptown, and Deep Ellum. All I can seem to find are those huge luxury complexes that are reminiscent of prisons and old factories.
Love the geographic analogies, by the way!

In Lakewood/East Dallas you should do some driving to look for signs. There are many, many independent landlords. Also check out the back of the Dallas Observer for classifieds. Deep Ellum is a bit harder to discern but the Observer has a lot of ads for that as well. You might stop in at The Allgood Cafe and inquire...

Look at Power Properties - they aren't so prison-like.
