The exposure is still a good thing overall.

Reality Is, North Texas Is Booming For TV Production « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

"...Smoot says Dallas became an iconic city because of the 80′s television series “Dallas” and even that show is coming back. “I just think it’s great exposure for the city of Dallas...

And that exposure is generating millions of dollars. According to the city of Dallas, for every $1 million spent shooting, the economic impact is $2.3 million.

...It’s a major city. It’s an incredible city. It’s an incredible city to shoot. It’s scenic. There are a ton of visuals that you can get from Dallas itself for the show.”

But what kind of Icon is Dallas becoming?

With shows like GCB, I think its the wrong kind of icon.

I think GCB is probably ok for the image of Dallas. The previews make it look so intentionally over the top, that I don't think it creates a generally negative impression. I think it comes off as parody. Like Portlandia mocks Portland culture, but is recognized as OTT Satire, I think GCB will be close to that.

I actually worry more about Dallas, which may - like the old show - by being less comically OTT create an impression that we are all in the oil industry, wear cowboy hats and boots, and have thick accents. When we lived in the UK in the 80's everyone there thought Dallas was like Dallas. Ditto relatives in Chicago and Minnesota.

To me (and I don't live there....yet!), whatever brings $$ into the local economy and notoriety to the city/area, and doesn't hurt animals or children () is great. As they say, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

After all, the great companies that call the area home know better; that this is a great area, regardless of all those shows.
