adi1, if you could be any more specific about their desires that would be helpful.

There are a number of places that would work (which may come as a surprise, but the reason why is because Dayton's Indian community is not very concentrated). Any more info you could provide would be helpful. Here's some good questions to answer:

-Where you are working?
-How much you are willing to spend on housing?
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate
-If you have kids: Private school or public school?
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: small town feeling? small city excitement? suburbia delight?
-Community amenities important to you?
-Pie or cake?

(from the relocation sticky thread here - credit to Dayton Sux for the questions)

I've noticed a larger than average concentration of Indians around the Fairfield Mall area in Beavercreek. There's a lot of apartments around there (and the school district is good as well).

(More to come later, I promise - when I'm not headed out the door!)

She is moving to Ohio and they will be working in Dayton. I think she and her husband will be ok commuting for maybe 8-15 miles from where they work.

They are looking for a good school district for their child who is 7 years old.

They are ok with small town feeling or small city excitement or suburbia delight, but their requirement is to be in Asian Indian community. They are looking for a 3 bed townhome to rent.Community amenities would be important-like club house, tennis courts etc.

Their requirement is great schools and Asian India community.

Can anyone help?

^Good call CP.

Have to concur with hensleya1 that there is a larger than average concentration of Indians near the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek, and the Hindu temple is there too.

I'd also add a number of Indians love in the Austin Landing/Dayton Mall area, and a number of Indian restaurants, an Indian grocer, etc. are in that area. Some more are scattered throughout other parts of the metro.

A max rent figure would be helpful, as would a more specific work location (there's a big difference in commute between Dayton - downtown, Dayton - airport, Dayton - VA, Dayton - HP off Needmore/Harshman, and Dayton - Austin Landing/Wright Bros. airport/Connor Group, all of which are in Dayton city limits). So if they work at WPAFB, Austin Landing would not meet the commute criteria, and if they work at the Dayton airport, both of the above options are out, for instance.

Anyways, here's a resource to help out:

which is part of this initiative:

And please, more info = more ability to help. Hard to plan without a rough budget or rough idea of where the work location is.

If your sister's family happens to be Sikh, there is also a gurudwara being built in Beavercreek at the moment as well. According to Census and other Indian community estimates, 1500-1800 people of Indian descent live in Beavercreek, which has a population of about 45000. While 3-4% may not sound like much, it is higher than other communities in the area.

The Indian community is concentrated at the north and south ends of the I-675 expressway. I live near the south end and am in walking distance of two indian markets. In fact the Indians living in my apartment complex have an informal cricket game going on Sunday afternoons. There is a substantial and visible indian community here.

One of the markets near me is this one:
Bombay Bazar Dayton - Featured Products

Then there is this one, which is opening a second location at the north end of I-675 to serve the indian community in Beavercreek and Fairborn (the area near the uni)

I think Washington Township (Centerville Schools) would be a great option as well. There are plenty of townhomes scattered mostly south of Ohio Road 725 (Miamisburg-Centerville Road). Look around the intersections of Lyons and 725 as well as McEwen and 725 and Paragon and 725. The three places with sizable Indian communities are Centerville / Washington Township, Miami Township (around the Dayton Mall and Austin Landing) and Beavercreek (Fairfield Mall area). The first two are in the southern section of the Dayton metropolitan area. Beavercreek is east of Dayton and closer to the hub of defense contractors and the air force base, which includes the Air Force Research Labs HQ (AFRLHQ).

Miami Township is primarily served by Miamisburg City Schools. While not the same caliber as Centerville, it is still a rather good district. Beavercreek is probably even or just under Centerville by state standard rankings.

If by chance the family is Indian Muslim, currently, the nearest Mosque is located down in West Chester(?) Township, off I-75 between Dayton and Cincinnati. There is a private Islamic preschool and I believe elementary school in Beavercreek. That will be replaced soon when a new Mosque and school is built between Bellbrook and Beavercreek on Alpha-Bellbrook Road.

If Sikh, there is a new center being built on Factory Road north of US 35. And the Hindu temple is located behind the shopping centers along N. Fairfield at the Fairfield Commons Mall exit. Even if they don't fall into one of those three religious practices, it seems there are groups out there that cater to welcoming foreigners, including Asian Indians, into the area. I'd have the family search out these groups.

There is not much more than the anxiety of moving to a new area let alone to a new country. I was in Washington DC one day and driving through an adjoining neighborhood. I was taken back when a car pulled up next to me an said I really didn't want to be driving in this area and it would be safer for me to leave. With that I hope to pass this forward with no disrespect to the other areas of town. My recommendation for a new comer would be to go either North or South of downtown Dayton. Beavercreek, Centerville, Englewood, Oakwood and Springboro are good community areas with good schools. If your not a local I would shy away from the West and East sides of the city.
