(Corrects headline and text throughout to make clear KFC program was amended, not canceled)

LOS ANGELES, May 8 (Reuters) - The Oprah Winfrey-fueled free chicken give-away that caused pandemonium this week at Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants has been amended due to what the fast-food chain called an "overwhelming response."

CORRECTED - KFC amends free chicken deal after Oprah promo | U.S. | Reuters

This is an absolute disaster for KFC... imagine over 10M downloads in one day... a promo that went out of control. Oprah said this is even bigger than her huge free cars giveaway.(over 10 times?). I estimate these free chicken meals will costs over $50M in a few days. KFC is in damage control... now one needs to fill out a form and send it in with the coupon to receive a rain check. I read that more often than not just getting the form is difficult and many people don't have the patience to fill it up, or mail it in. I guess that's a ploy to reduce the damage.

I wish I had known about it, I would have gotten me a coupon.

You are correct! From what I've seen so far, you have to go the KFC just to get the form. Why didn't they make it something you could download? Can we say "minimize the losses"?

I have two coupons. I'll probably just drop them off at a local charity and they can send in for the raincheck if they want to.

ugh, this is a mess. took me forever just to print out 3 coupons and now it looks like it's going to take forever to redeem them. I guess it shouldn't be anything to get upset about (don't even like KFC that much to begin w/, but hey, it's free food!), it's just annoying when such things are hyped up and the company fails to meet the demand. this reminds me of the "Free Dr. Pepper" fiasco where the site crashed on the day people were supposed to go on
