NASCAR in Dover, September 24-26 2010 (Wilmington: camping, live, restaurants)

It's been a wonderful week so far in Dover, which started for many of us on Saturday, September 18th. As of last night, Thursday, Sept. 23rd, crowds were light, and we've not seen the usual thousands of campers in fields, as we typically do by the Thursday before the race. The bad economy has spared none. Danica Patrick is making a NASCAR appearance this weekend, and she seems to be the focus of the race, with local newspapers giving her the most press.

Downtown, and up and down the Rt. 13 strip in Dover, it's business as usual with lots of live music, jump-the-wall contests, autograph signings of drivers & pit crew members, and seafood/steak specials in local restaurants. New this year is the pop-up Giant Food Store located in the camping area behind the track, operating until Sunday night. They are catering to the campers and have stocked up on ice, sodas, burgers, rolls and all staples campers may need. Unusual, since we don't have a Giant Food Store in Dover, but a great convenience, and people don't have to venture out on Rt. 13 hunting for a grocery store.

A headache for some, lots of fun for others, and a big boom to the Dover economy....Nascar Week! Here's the schedule of events.

I was at the race Sunday and unfortunely it was yet another extremely boring Dover race. I think that was my last Dover race and I think a lot of people seem to think the same way judging by the empty seats. There were a LOT of them! However there is so much to do in that area I'll be going back, just not to the race.

I agree, builder24car! All of race week, we heard from visitors that their neighbors and friends opted to skip the Dover race this year. Reasons given were the sluggish economy, and/or lack of interest in The Chase. Actually, we were worn out from the 10 day stretch of activities in the area, prior to the race. Only 10 minutes from the track, we decided to watch Sunday's race on T.V. and ran out on our back deck to hear the roaring of motors, and witness the fly-over.

Hope you got a chance to photograph some mills, as you mentioned before.

I did. I found Bancroft Mill in Wilmington and that place is incredible! I spent most of the day there. I also ate at Joe's Crab Shack while there which is one of my favorite places and as an added bonus I found some graffiti to shoot so I was a happy camper. I love me some Delaware!

The race was definitely without excitement, aka no wrecks, which meant 400 laps leading one to want a power nap! But thankfully, our son's driver FINALLY won and we were there to see it, so it was a fun day for us. As has been mentioned before, NASCAR week is definitely a Dover event!
