I am in need of some wonderful ideas from other posters here. How do regular working people, grandparnets, afford to get dental or periodontal work done? No, I don't have dental insurance. My health insurance dropped the dental insurance years ago. I am semi-retired and work 6-7 days a week all day long just to make ends meet--without any extras. Now I find myself in need of some very expensive periodontal work. I have that CareCredit but it still has a lot on it due to my dental work and my vet for my animals and there is no where near enough credit left on that for this proceedure. I have no idea who to call or even where to look for some possibilities so here I am. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Deep cleaning with root plan and antibiotics added or if I can come up with enough money laser treatment on my gums. They said my gums aren't bad in the front but the back needs some work. I have been quoted a price of $4,300 for the lasar and $2,300 for the scaling with the root plan.. This is a Periodontist.
For regular dental work we go to a dental school/college. Dont know if you have any of those near you, or if they do that type of procedure. You have to apply, and if you qualify the work is free. And it's always perfect, in our experience.
Before that i had a dentist that would let me pay partially up front and then i was on a payment plan with no interest.

"aren't bad in front" and "needs some work" aren't diagnoses. Do you have gingevitis? Or periodontal disease? Or some other specific problem? If not, then you don't need scaling. If you don't have an infection, then your need for antibiotics is pretty low, if non-existent (antibiotics are sometimes prescribed in advance of certain procedures even if there's no infection present).
I don't know anything about laser treatment on gums so someone else will have to field that. My guess though, is that whatever they're recommending laser treatment for, can either be addressed with some less expensive procedure, or is another unneccessary thing that some "specialists" try to push on patients (like ZOOM whitening treatment and oral cancer swab testing).
I have some deep pockets in the back of my mouth on my gums. The Dr. said my gums are great around all of the teeth in the front part of my mouth. My reason for even seeing this Dr. was I had an abscess. I guess it would be called a periodontal disease because of the deep pockets. The infection is gone because I took amoxocillin but the area still needs to be repaired I suppose.
Those costs sound really high to me. I had an infection/deep pocket where I needed some scaling done, plus some medicine in another pocket, then a good cleaning and all this was just a few hundred $$$. Maybe the price is so high because it's in a periodontist office rather than a dentist. I would definitely get another opinion. The first dentist/period I saw before all my reconstruction work wanted to do crown lengthening surgery on me - just the upper quadrants would have been a cost of $6,500 and it was invasive surgery! The dentist was then going to charge me about $23,000 to do all the reconstruction in my upper jaw, and didn't even include the implants I would need on the bottom.
I got a second opinion, turned out I didn't need the gum surgery, my specialist dentist did some contouring/lengthening with a laser and did all the upper AND lower work for $20,000 - a lot of money but half what the first one would have charged. it really pays to get a second opinion.
Kat,
Where do you live? My wife just got quoted $8K for the laser deep cleaning. $4K is a bargain in comparison. I'm not finding too much info on laser deep cleaning on internet.
Hey Snort. I think you may be right about the price I was quoted. This Periodontist comes highly recommended and I am just going to bite the bullet. My teeth are worth it. I may have to work 24/7 for a couple of years but it's only money afterall. The laser deep cleaning is suppose to be the greatest thing to come along according to my dentist. He said the results he has seen have been amazing. Not sure where you are located but if you live anywhere close to NC I know a great Dr!!!
I think you need to shop around. Maybe go to a regular dentist rather than a specialist. I just had a partial scaling this morning and go in next week for the other half. All in all, it cost a little over $500. After insurance stepped in, my share was only $145.
