Hello all,

I am experiencing a sore-ish pain when chewing on the right side of my mouth. It feels like it is coming from 2 adjacent teeth. I do have some gum recession. I have a tendency to grind my teeth at night, so I do wear a dental guard from my dentist. The pain started last 2 Thurs ago. I was probably grinding quite a bit since I was under stress. I did my usual of rinsing with salt water, brush/floss, and taking advil. It's been over a week and 1/2 and it is still in pain when I chew on that side. I already went to my dentist earlier this week and she tested the chewing surface and examined the gums. I had no pain. But if I were to chew on, say.. scrambled eggs on that side, it will hurt in a sore-ish way (not acute pain), but goes away after I eat. There is also a bit of soreness on the jaw on that side.

So I am confused now as to what to do next? If it is caused by gum issues, how long does it take to heal? The longest I had gum-related pain is about 4 days. But I've never had tooth pain along with gum issues. I'm just not sure about going back to the dentist since she did the air, bite, and other exams and saw nothing wrong. The pain feels deep, under the tooth type of feel? I do have 2 crowned teeth with root canals done adjacent to these 2 teeth. I am in my late 30s and diabetic. (controlled)

Thoughts? Thanks much in advance!

Your next step is to return to the dentist, tell her the soreness hasn't abated, and you want her to check further. If there was inflammation at the surface, she would've seen it. You could have a weakened tooth that needs a root canal, or a cavity beneath the gumline that isn't evident with "air, bite, and other exams." An x-ray will show if there's anything going on that isn't visible on the surface.

Thanks for the response Anonchick.

I went back several times at this point. She took an x-ray, and had me get it checked with a root canal specialist. The endodontist took ANOTHER x-ray and saw nothing wrong with any of the tooth. He did check my bite and it seemed to be off. He asked me to take my dental guard back to the dentist to get it adjusted for bite. He shaved off bits of the teeth that was overlapping. I got it adjusted twice, and the sore is still there. So puzzling! I'm not sure what to else to do that this point? My gums are not inflamed. It seems to be sore on one side of a tooth. I've been asked to just continue using the dental guard, but I am worried about the dental guard causing bigger issues at this point. Try a different dentist at this point? I've already been to 2.
