Can old crown be used after root canal? (dentist, permanent, filling)

I just had a root canal by a specialist that my dentist sent me to. I have been referred back to my dentist. The specialist drilled through the crown to do the root canal and put a temporary filling in it. Do I have to get a new crown now or can a permanent filling be put in and keep the crown?

What did your dentist say? Tell him that strangers on the internet said he should use the same crown.

Yes, a permanent filling can be put in and you can keep the crown, I know because the same thing happened to me.
