Is it uncommon to have wisdom teeth removed without sedation? (pain, molar)

Call me a wimp but I'd take the sedation. I've had colonoscopies with no sedation and I once watched calmly as an ER doc stitched up a long, nasty cut in my thumb, but I find dental work nerve-wracking. Maybe it's because I can't see what's going on? I've gotten through simple extractions with only local anaesthesia but even then I hate the pulling and the nasty crack when it separates from the bone.
Fortunately, the messy extractions (one tooth with a hairline crack in root, a few others with not much left above the surface after the portion holding up a crown or a bridge decayed) have been done by an oral surgeon under light sedation, with implants placed at the same time. I go in with perfect calm knowing that the magic substance will ull me to sleep and when I wake up it will be all over.
It was common for me to always use novacaine with the wisdom teeth and for when I had around fourteen teeth pulled also. I felt the hard pressure, grinding, etc. , it took awhile, but I never felt any pain. It's your choice, op.

Okay, taking into account your comments and the surgeon's advice, I will still not have actual sedation but I'll take the Valium he prescribed before the procedure.
I've never taken one of those, how am I supposed to feel?

A friend who was afraid of flying would take Xanax to combat the anxiety when she had to fly. She reported that it didn't make her feel high or anything weird but that it just made her stop worrying. Valium might be similar.
Your choice OP. I had novacaine too but the oral surgeon only did the teeth on the same side at the same time. Then after that side healed, the other side was done. Pulling, grinding etc but no real discomfort.
I had a oral surgeon wanted to do the when he had to cut open my gums and remove my implants. He was shocked I declined and it took a hour. When done he commented how tough I was. People are wimps now days.

A Valium? Ha! Like heaven.orgasm. amazing. Best opiate ever. You'll get addicted! That's a good thing....

I think I need some Xanax.
But will I be aware of what's going on or just sleepy?

Valium isn't an opiate. Taken as directed all it does is "take the edge off."
