Do cars being registered in Colorado have to undergo any kind of inspection or emissions testing?

Yes. And it has to be done at specific emissions testing locations. You also have to pay the $20 something out of pocket. There is also a VIN verification but I hear that can be done at your dealer location as well. If you do the verification at the emission station, there is an additional charge.

Side note: You also need to have CO insurance before registering. Mine was out of state and the DMV told me to get CO insurance as soon as possible.

We just registered our cars here and didn't need CO insurance. Of course you should get it soon, but it isn't required.

Thank goodness there are still many places in CO that DON"T require emission testing.

Air Care Colorado :: Program Area Maps

You may want to send your cars to 'Boarding School' (cars living in a different / rural county) Especially if you are into performance cars (or beaters).

Depending on where you are from you might want to HURRY to get CO insurance. Mine doubled when I left CO and settled in WA (where 40% of drivers are uninsured)

Yes - They gave me my plates as well but they made it a point to tell me to get my CO insurance as soon as possible (I had proof of out of state insurance with me at that time).

I was with AAA Wisconsin and my insurance company could not give me a clear cut answer if my WI insurance policy was valid with my new CO license plates - so, rather than find it out the hard way, I got a CO insurance policy ASAP.
