Hi, I was born and raised in Seattle. Lived close to downtown (Magnolia-Queen Anne). Moving to Denver on Nov. 1. Will be renting for one year, then purchasing with a max budget of 500K. Married w/2 kids. Working downtown.

We are OK with new construction-suburbia style, but would prefer older walkable neighborhoods.

I'm looking for advice. I've read most of the threads but am looking for up to date advice or advice with people who have knowledge of a Seattle to Denver move.

I've heard that schools aren't as big of a concern because there are charter schools all throughout Denver and the public schools (outside of downtown) are excellect. ***Is this true?***

Going on Monday thru Thursday to check out neighborhoods, and my list includes:

Highlands Ranch-Castle Pines
(From a previous visit this is a sacrafice ((driving distance/style)) for good schools and good place to raise kids)

Parker
Same as above

Littleton-Englewood

Stapleton-Lowery

Golden

Centennial

Downtown

Westminster

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Default Why the burbs?

Quote:
Magnolia-Queen Anne
The closest neighborhoods in Denver are: Highland, West Highland, Berkeley, Sloan's Lake (really more like a puddle, not Lake Washington). These 'hoods have both old 1890s houses and brand new build.

Edison Elementary in West Highland is a good school. The performance of kids there is highly dependent upon "receives free lunch or not".

Many charter school options in GREATER Denver. Problems include: commuting distance and availability of spaces/slots.

The age of your kids "es muy importante". And, they are?

That is very helpful! Thank you...I will add those neighborhoods to my list! Those are areas I haven't been told to visit yet

Kids are grade school age.

Thank you!! I'm excited to see Denver...Any other suggestions while we are there? We are staying downtown.

all of the areas you listed are fine. There are not many bad areas that you need to watch out for. I agree that if you want the older, walkable neighborhoods, the ones that were listed could work for you. I have heard Edison and Brown are both good schools in the Highlands area. Charter schools can have long waiting lists, so don't necessarily bank on those. Check out schooldigger.com You can get school rankings there if you want to see them.
