I lived in Denver, Capitol Hill area, for a year several years back. Never had anything stolen.

Believe it or not, a potted strawberry plant was stolen from my porch.
Hopefully whoever took it enjoyed the strawberries.

I've had several several bike lights stolen when I left my bike locked up overnight, but now I don't leave them attached anymore. Bike theft here is very light compared to when I lived in NYC:

I had my car broken into once in 10 years in Denver.

In Dallas I had my car broken into 3 times and my bike stolen twice in 5 years.

In Vacaville CA, I had my car stolen once, and my house robbed twice in 2 years.

It's all just coincidence that determines what city you've had the worst luck in. I'm sorry that Denver has been yours.

Trust me there are far worse areas for crime in the USA.

i've lived here for almost four and a half years.

my wife had her bike stolen from the front of the downtown rei in the summer of 2010 (cable lock) - about 10am.

somebody rifled through my car and my neighbor's car overnight (both were unlocked, mine by accident) last summer near downing and yale. neither of us had anything in them, except for the ninety cents in change i had in the console which they took.

a few times i've had my bike tampered with while locked up at a light rail stop during the day - either at the DU or alameda stop. it's a cheap-o road bike, maybe worth $100, but someone started sawing through the U lock, and someone else tried loosening the wheels.

in my attempts to pay it forward, i thwarted a bike seat theft at the du stop - it was about 5pm on a weekday and somebody tried pulling a bike seat off a locked up bike. i started yelling at him and he freaked out and jumped onto the departing light rail train.

all that said, my neighbors often leave their garage door open at night, or bikes unlocked on their front porch for hours at a time and nothing's happened.

thanks for posting the video, woob - alarming. i couldn't believe i was the only person to say something when that guy tried stealing the bike seat. there were dozens of other people near me at the time.

I'm about to buy my 1st bike, though, and theft is something I'm worried about, because no matter what kind of lock you've got, it's still possible to steal stuff off it.
Use high quality U-locks, and a cable around the U-lock for the front tire. Don't leave locked up overnight outside. most bike lights are detachable, and if you buy panniers or racks make sure they're detachable or bolted on.

I had bike lights and pump stolen on Auraria campus. Don't ever leave decent gear on your bike on that campus. I had an iPod touch stolen by some dirtbag in a kitchen I was working in, but I wouldn't think that qualifies necessarily. Otherwise, no thefts. Thieves are lazy by nature. If you make yourself an easy target, then you're at risk. If it's harder than getting a job, thieves will move on. Plain and simple.

Auraria Campus is the "stealing capitol of Denver", I know several people who have also learned that the hard way.
