All health insurance is crazy-priced.

And don't blame health care reform legislation. Profits are up even more now than they were before.

Like any other business, health care is in it to make money.

If you think paying premiums hurt, what do you think will happen if you have a medical emergency while uninsured? Most uninsured working class people are just one medical emergency away from losing all they have.

I was offered the same from my employer. Went with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and got the same exact coverage my employer offered me for 1/4 the price. Shop around. Medical Care in this country is messed up..

Colorado is one of the most health care friendly states. If your bf doesn't make more than about $43k, then you may be able to get help from the State's program. You can pay in and it is really inexpensive. If you make more than 43k, then you'll be forced to go with a private supplier and prices can be all over the place.

You might consider just getting "catastrophic" insurance. It would cover a medical emergency and has a pretty high deductible, but for healthy people, it is a great coverage.

Personally, I don't go to the doctor very often, so when I do go, I just pay out of pocket. Many physicians offer a significant discount for paying the day of service. Thus, a typical $100 doctor visit only costs me about $60. But on a monthly basis, I don't pay a HUGE premium. Instead, I am covered for catastrophic events for those times like David said above. The deductible is 5K, but that's a LOT less than what a catastrophic event would cost. We can swallow 5k a lot easier than 100k. Does that make sense?

Check around and see if any medical clinics offer their health care services on a sliding scale or call Atnea or any of the other health insurance ccompanies and see if they offer better premiums and deductibles for health, dental and vision.

So what do you mean by "crazy-priced" ??
Without specifics, it is hard to advise if the offer was low, "normal" or high ??
Large employer, or small ??
Single, couple, or family coverage ?
Large or small deductible ??

If a small employer, perhaps they have priced their plan so that no one uses it .

You can get free, online, anonymous quotes here. Be sure to compare apples to apples re Deductibles, Copays, etc

I would say a small/medium business. Less than 1000 employees total. He would pay $250 a month and the company pays the other part. That's him alone. If he added me, it would be $700 a month!!! This is with a 2K deductible.

I used to work for an health insurance company and have had it before so I know what the deal is. I just thought that was completely high or is this normal for CO?

We can't do anything with the states program as him income is too high.

We're definitely getting it but need to shop around as I'm with the same company and I'll be in the same boat in a month.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

That monthly premium does seem a little exaggerated for two adults. I suggest comparing similar insurance quotes with a slightly higher deductible or look into a health savings plan as another alternative.

Since you aren't married, I am surprised that he can even add you at all. I didn't know that companies let you do that.
