Last piece of advice from me on this: You take I-25 to Exit 235 then go 5 miles west to The Tree Farm. .

Seriously, I buy my trees there.

Aren't Silver Maples the trees with the awful surface roots and weak limb structure?

I had them back east and it damned near broke my arms to control a lawn mower over those roots and the limbs will come down in a major storm - keep them away from any structures. IIRC these are the maples that shed tens of thousands of "propeller" seed pods that fill your rain gutter each Spring.

I've seen some Autumn Blaze Maples here in COLO SPGS that don't have the root issues and turn red in the fall.

Want to plant a heritage tree? Check out the tree on E 1st Ave between Elm and Eudora (near Cranmer Park/Hilltop). I've been told it's an English oak. Dense shade. Gorgeous form. Absolutely stunning.

Denver Botanic Gardens has an impressive oak grove. Oak do take longer to get going, but replacing a large junk tree after it starts to fall apart also has a price.

Regardless of what you choose, don't make the mistake of planting a large-caliper tree. Small whips get established quicker and will outpace larger transplants.

Great post.

I will go check that tree out next time I am in the area. I have a few favorites in Wash Park. The is a Red Oak on the West side of the 1100 or 1200 block of South Vine Street that I ride my bike by on a regular basis just to admire. Total tree geek.
