For a home purchase, I can find a LOT of places that cost less than $1800 a month (mortgage) in the western suburbs. And they'll be in good (and improving) neighborhoods. And I can probably find more than 2000 square feet. Though I don't know the rental side. One of the things I like about the general area I'm in is the wide variety of homes and home prices.

Please don't take these questions the wrong way. I'm generally curious about the appeal. I have some ideas on why people want to live down south based on a few friends there, but I'm looking for a better understanding.
