I agree that if one likes a conservative, clean cut look Denver is not a good place for that. But, very much disagree that the west isn't a good place for that. I have lived in the west for 8 years (only one in Denver - so new to here - and the furthest east I have been "in the west". I would definitely say the west is more casual (and I very much like that), but not in the way Denver is... there is a difference.

Wanted to add: You can be very casual and still have a 'put-together' look. I live in the western suburbs and I don't see the kind of casual I see in California, Oregon, Utah, Nevada or Arizona.

I live in Highlands Ranch and I approve of the attire (if they are in shape).

Denver has a lot of green collar jobs.

Interesting thread.

Yes, people do dress however they like here, and although I am definitely in favor of that, I do admit that I also find it disconcerting* to go to the DCPA for an evening performance and find about 30% of the patrons wearing jeans or something similar. (*No pun intended!)

One thing I have noticed here in south Jeffco, though, is that many more young women and teens are wearing summer dresses than they have in recent years, and I personally find women who wear summer dresses much more appealing than those who wear tattered jeans and camis with their bra straps showing. (JMHO, of course!)

I wouldn't characterize Denver as dressed down, I would just call it out of style. Everyone here dresses in workout sports type clothing. I think Gap would be a step up from how everyone in Denver dresses, for the most part.

Hahahahaha. The Gap wouldn't be a step up.

How do you dress?

I don't wear basketball shorts out in public ever. I wear khaki shorts in the summer and a teeshort with no graphics, rarely do I wear a polo or collared shirt unless I'm in a professional setting. People in Denver mostly wear basketball or soccer shorts and a shirt from Sports Authority. Even when they wear a tee shirt, it is always from a sports store, that's why I say something from Gap would be an improvement.

Even in professional settings woman wear spandex, usually with a decent top, but a dress is rare. WOULD A DRESS KILL YOU!!!?!!

Just more bitterness from someone who clearly would be happier in the SE. Just go already then you can stop manufacturing things to be bent out of shape about.

This.

There have been 5.5 million people here living their life, mostly content with the way things are. You can't expect the people that live here to change for you. This is already a problem with the "changing culture" of Denver in the last few years. Lots of people moving here from major cities, and then complaining about the culture here (or mostly the winter). I hear too many transplants complaining while out at the bars in Highlands...

The worst complaint I heard was from a Boston transplant. They went on a 10 min rant about how people here are too "slow and laid back"...yes, an actual complaint. Most people seek out the laid back vibe, but for this women, it was apparently killing her.
