Both Chautauqua Park and Eldorado Canyon offer some world class climbing routes, and if you don’t want to pack your gear, you could book a guide through CMS. The 1st and 3rd flatirons are both easy (5.7) half day climbs, but there are more difficult routes in the area if you prefer.

WTF. So I can't hike too high, I can't white water raft. I didn't realize Colorado was so seasonal.

When it comes to whitewater rafting, peak flows are over and done with by mid-late June. You can still raft, but it won't be as good.

When it comes to hiking above timberline you just have to be ready to punt. It could be completely dry/summer conditions or there could be fresh snow.

You can do most of what would interest you in Denver in the 4 hrs before your flight (hopefully in the dark, as will be your bar / 420 routines).

Outdoors stuff... define your most likely enjoyable and accessible activities.
go there, do that.

Stream flow is too low in Sept for good kayak / whitewater.

Plenty of climbing near Boulder
Estes Park / Long's Peak / RMNP is 1.5 hrs away from DEN

Short trip = plan stuff close by.

What about some multiday guided group hikes where you camp out? I like challenge and adventure.

A couple places to go for multi-day backpacking trips near Denver include the Lost Creek Wilderness near Bailey and the Colorado Trail between Denver and Fairplay. If you're looking for the ultimate multi-day backpacking trip in Colorado it has to be the Four Pass Loop, but that's near Aspen - 3-4 hours from Denver.

If you're looking to escape town and do some hiking or backpacking a car is a must.

What elevation are you coming from? If you’re coming from sea level, trying to jump right in and climb a 13 or 14,000 foot peak can be brutal.

There are plenty of great hikes that can be done in september provided there isn’t a freak storm. Winter does come early to the high country, but September is usually a nice time still. Especially if you stay below 11,000 feet. Bring warm clothes if you plan to be at elevation. Layering is key.

As for the whitewater, the latest it is viable is August 15th when the dam release flows on the Arkansas River are turned off. This year is shaping up to be an especially short season with our low snowpack.

There are world class sport climbing routes in Eldorado Canyon near Boulder. Clear Creek canyon outside of Denver also has good sport routes.

Do you have all the backpacking gear you need or will you be renting?

Yes you should rent a car.

I was thinking more about the white water rafting. If you really want to go big, Gore Canyon runs late in the season. There are only a few commercial companies that run it, and I’m not sure how late in the season they go, but I have definitely kayaked Gore in September.

Gore is big kid whitewater. It’s not a good ‘first time on the river’ run.

The Gore Canyon section of the Colorado River is the most challenging commercially run section of whitewater in the state of Colorado and perhaps the most challenging section of river run commercially in the United States.

September seems like a bad time of the year to go. Not good for white water rafting, can't snow ski, not good for hiking to peaks...
