All this talk of terrible food, especially terrible pizza, has me laughing about something I saw... When the COVID lockdowns first began, in those first weeks, I remember on my way to get groceries I saw a huge, spray painted sign posted on a Chuck-E-Cheese advertising that you can still get delivery or take out from them. I was laughing so hard...who on earth actually ever went to Chuck-E-Cheese for the food??? That is bonkers. "Rat Pizza from the Child Casino."

OK so we all know the opinions of Beau Jos... Anyone have any recommendations for really good food in Idaho Springs? For a smallish looking town they do have a number of restaurants, after all.

Oh, and to the pizza subject... My fiance and I have both noticed that any time we eat Dominos in the last couple of years, and not just ordered from the one by our house but one across town when we were visiting...we get sick from it, it seems. Has anyone else had issues with Dominos pizza specifically upsetting their stomach? Maybe we're just getting old, I dunno. I mean, I know not to expect chain pizza to be amazing and incredible, but I used to be able to eat delivery pizza like that and at least not feel awful later!

Smokin Yard's has great BBQ (the line is out the door most weekend afternoons), and Tommyknocker's not bad for a brew pub.

Getting OT here, but regarding getting ill after eating a long-familiar food: We don’t eat Domino’s pizza. We did eat Burger King burgers sometimes, over a few decades. No more! I noticed I was getting an almost-immediate case of the runs (no pain or sick feeling involved) after eating their burgers. This had never happened before. The same outlet’s burgers also made a contractor get bad headaches after eating them. I suspect BK changed something in their ingredients to which we have different food intolerance reactions.

It is also possible that a company is violating proper food storage and handling requirements. Did you check your county’s random food inspection reports? They are public.

Pizza is all about the crust, and the crust is baked.

That presents the problem.

Colorado is high altitude and dry.

At high altitude, air pressure is lower, so foods take longer to bake. Temperatures and/or bake times need to be increased. Liquids evaporate faster, so amounts of flour and liquids need to be changed to prevent dough becoming too moist, too dry or gummy. Gases expand more, so doughs rise faster.

In other words, quit complaining about the the quality of pizza and bagels. They will never taste the same here as some lowland city. Eat a bowl of green chile.

BJ's sucks but you all should try the thin crust. It really isn't thin but actually a normal pizza and it's serviceable if you can't make your own (which is the only way to get good pizza here!).

On the topic of (small) chain pizza, I love Mici. Anyone else had it?

Eh.

While it's a proven fact that you can't get real cheesecake west of the Hudson, nor real sourdough out of line of sight with SF, the basics of adjusting BASIC cooking like a plain dough crust were solved for altitude long ago. As long as a shoppe is actually using a high-altitude recipe, I contest that there's any difference between pizza crusts otherwise intended to be the same (thin crust, risen crust, etc.)
