My husband and I are mid twenties, driving across country from MA to CA. Stopping in Denver for a day. What are the MUST SEES??

Seriously, for one day, I would just stay downtown and see our beautiful modern city. You can go to the Capital, the Mint and enjoy Denver on the Great Plains. There is more than enough to see in one day and it would be relaxing. You can take the free 16th Street mall shuttle through downtown and perhaps get on the commuter rail for a good sightseeing trip through Denver to the South. For Colorado is not only about the mountains--most people live and work on the grasslands of the high plains.

Find a place downtown to park, start at the Capitol and work your way up 15th, 16th or 17th Street (free shuttle bus up 16th Street) till you get to the South Platte River. Then spin around and walk along Cherry Creek. Somewhere along the way grab a bite to eat and hit up (depending on your preference) the Tattered Cover Bookstore, catch a Rockies game, try some local beers, do the Aquarium, Elitch Gardens, see a show at the Center for Performing Arts or if you're there at night try to catch the firedancers and drummers at Confluence Park if they are out that night. Just about all of that is in walking distance so any of them would be well worth your while. And all of that is just downtown.

Thanks for the tips, all. Coming from Boston where we are proud to be locals and know the 'good' spots, I'd rather stay out of "super touristy" areas! What are some good local spots on the side streets? Also, what is the weather like typically around late Sept?

I would suggest hitting the Highland's in Denver's NW neighborhood. Great local spots and restaurants, independent shopping, trendy. From I/70, you should exit Lowell/Tennyson (about a mile past the I-25 interchange). Head left on Lowell to 32nd and you will be in Highland's Square. 32nd is the main strip and runs a few blocks. You won't be disappointed.

P.S. stay away from downtown. As a CO native, I find it overly-touristy and really not all that it's hyped up to be. There are some great parks and creeks with walking paths, and art galleries, but they'll cause you a lot of time navigating and the Highland neighborhood will offer more history and some of the best food in the city, at least within a quick detour from the highway.

You should check out the Denver Art Museum designed by Daniel Liebeskind. It's only a few blocks from downtown. Save 16th Street / downtown for the PM.

LOL. A realtor writes. Newsflash; the highlands area is dead now. There never was and never will be anything in that area that anyone wants to visit. The cheap prices that brought people in before they realized there were no schools? Gone.
A native you are not. A realtor with a vested interest you are.
Denver in a day? Impossible. The above posts have hit some highlights though. Maybe add lunch at the Cricket in Cherry Creek for diversity.

What's with all this inner city stuff - you can do that in any city. I always take visiting Russians to the dinosaur bones and footprints on Dinosaur Ridge. Right across the hwy. is Red Rocks park with great views of Denver. How about right up the road onto Lookout Mt. (Buffalo Bill museum if you must see a museum). Down the mt. then for a quick tour and brew at Coors.
