My daughter is moving into a home just west of MLK and Hickman in Des Moines. My brother has some big concerns over the crime rate in the area. Is anyone out there who lives in this area and can give me some feed back?

Thanks, Lynn

In relative Des Moines terms, it's a high crime area. There's some apartment complexes and a few problem bars in the area where much of it probably generates. This area is just north of what has historically been the highest crime area of the city.

Yeah, at the point she would be it's not as bad as say, MLK & Forest. I wouldn't worry too much.

It's generally known as having higher crime, but nothing that would probably affect the average person. It also depends on how far west of MLK she's living. The further west you go, the nicer it gets.

I live in the same area, and it just depends on the street. My mom had the same concerns, however I have been here for almost 2 years now and nothing has happened. Very friendly neighborhood. The southside has gotten terrible, specifically the south east side, alot of the crime that used to be over here in this area has moved toward there.
