Has anyone else noticed a sudden lag in their garbage pickup since the city entered into the Consent Agreement? I guess it's the garbage workers' way of protesting what's happening without actually going on strike.

I'm also assuming that's why our finest media outlets haven't reported on it.

Im seeing some pretty good ideas on those comments. Take your trash and dump it in government buildings. And get some private owned trash people.

What convinces you that you'll see IMPROVED services if things were privatized?

Well, the municipalities that use private trash collection do not have these problems.

Part of Detroit's problem is that scrappers collect other people's garbage, stip out whatever they can sell (mostly metals) and dump the remains in a convenient empty lot or river. No one pays to pick up this trash, so it will sit there indefinitely.

Detroit has 700,000 people over a 143 sq. mi. area, those municipalities have roughly 50,000 people in a roughly 10 sq. mi. area or less.

I support privatization. If you are worried about the size of the city, you could divide the city into several smaller districts and put each one out for bid separately.

Another possibility would be to have garbage collection every other week instead of weekly. May not be feasible in the warmer months for health reasons though.

Detroit is a "city on the move", yet can't pick-up trash.

Sigh.

Fire the entire trash pick-up team. Lock them out and throw the key into the river.

The city should then pay the homeless and druggies to pick-up trash. Pay the homeless and druggies for trash by the pound.

Sure, the first few weeks the homeless and druggies will bring in engine blocks and concrete walls and what-not, but eventually, the engine blocks and concrete will be picked up. Then the homeless and druggies will pick-up the rest of the trash. Within a few months Detroit could sparkle.

This is a good idea, especially considering the city has its own incinerator.

Well Detroit might be pretty huge for just one company unless they were huge. But like someone else said, it could be split up into districts, I think Detroit has about 7 or 8 of them. Averages 100,000 and roughly 20 square miles for each district. I said a few months ago that they should start treating each district like it's own city anyway.
