I used my debit card to make a purchase, but they ask debit or credit. I always choose credit so I can avoid paying the bank fee for making a debit purchase with the card. But now if a customer choose credit, they are required to give their license and card to the cashier for review first.

I get that this is to combat fraud and keep people from using cards that are not theirs to make purchases. However, it also gives the cashier the opportunity to steal the customer's identity with their full name, address, birthday and credit card number right there for the taking.

I'm wondering if I could say debit to avoid giving the cashier my cards and then just touch credit on the POS and still be able to make the purchase with credit.

Ummm, it has always been standard policy for all stores to request to see your ID when you use a credit card...

Say you'd rather use your card as a debit if it bothers you so much, or better yet, use cash.

If the cashier is smart enough to be able to memorize a name, address, birthday, and credit card number just by glancing at them, I don't think they would be working as a cashier. If a person really wanted to steal your identity, there are easier ways than getting a job as a cashier. All the times I've shown my license, they just glance at the picture, glance at me and hand the card back.

(No offense to cashiers.)

I work in retail. I see probably a thousand IDs and credit card numbers a day. All that information just goes into the brain as a jumble of random numbers and information and, honestly, has no use to me so I usually forget it by the time I'm done with the transaction.

To steal any information would actually take a considerable amount of time like actually taking the ID somewhere and writing down the information which obviously would raise the suspicion of the customer if the cashier is out in the open.

In SE MI, I'm pretty much NEVER asked for ID with a credit card. I'd say it happens less than once a month on average. Other areas, much more frequently. In Vegas it happens nearly every time. I'm not worried about identity theft all that much but I find it a significant annoyance to have to get out my ID. The first time I breezed through the casino checkpoint in Detroit without having to show ID, boy was I happy...I guess I finally look old

I was feeling a little under the weather so while at Target yesterday I bought some Nyquil and the cashier asked to see my driver's license. To buy Nyquil? What is this world coming to... haha

I thought all stores ask for id when you use credit. Which is standard and totally understandable. If they dont then anybody could come in the store and use your credit card. You really have to be careful especially around the holidays

yeah you can blame that on the youth of america. Places like target, walmart, meijer, etc. have to check ID for that, and spray paint, and other misc. items. All because they get high and drunk off of household items.

I've even had places like McDonalds as for my ID when doing a credit transaction. Most places though have a 25 dollar and under policy where if it's under 25 they don't HAVE to ask for ID but still can, but if it's over 25 they have to see ID.
