What do people in detroit think of EMINEM?

I've heard he never really grew up in inner city Detroit and I've heard people call him a fraud but in one of his songs he says 'I hate people that try to rep Detroit that live 30minutes away...' I love his music but i'm just wondering.

Do people in inner city Detroit think he's a fake? Or do you like him? is he really from inner city Detroit?

As I recall from watching the bonus features on the 8-mile DVD. In his interview he said he grew up just over on the Warren side of 8-mile rd, hence the reason for the name.

Lol, I think he's a hypocrite. He grew up in Warren, which was one of the most segregated Detroit suburbs with an African American population of less than one percent at the time. It was also upper-middle class, so I don't understand how he can reference inner city Detroit in his songs and act as if he grew up there. By the way, he didn't grow up in a trailer either. He grew up in a modest, 3 bedroom ranch .

Really? Not to knock the city of Warren, but upper-middle class?

I'm curious dmetro; what in your opinion are the class criteria for the poor, the working poor, the lower middle class, the upper middle class, and the weathly?

He's got a HUGE 3 story cottage on Torch Lake (near Elk Rapids) that is anything but "inner city". The place has multiple level decks and at least 3 or 4 stone chimneys, and just about every water toy you could want. Looks more like MTV Beach Party.

(not that there's anything wrong with owning a place like that, but Eminem's "hood" days are long over)

Actually, he bounced all over Metro Detroit (as well as KCMO) and did live in Detroit at some points of his life. And whoever thinks south warren is upper middle class needs to take a trip down there.... Even in the 80's it was kinda seedy and shady (I know, I grew up around there and had friends there). It wasn't quite as rough as Detroit but it wasn't quite as buccolic as the suburbs further north, either.

And my opinion of Eminem? I think its awesome that someone from Warren made it as big as he did... He had a ****ty, *&^%ed up childhood and now he's livin it up in style... Good for him!

I must give him credence for making it super-big in a field traditionally dominated by people of the opposite skin color. in the end, our opinion of him matters very little.. his global popularity and financial success truly speaks for itself.

gotta join in on the questioning of warren = upper middle class?? Have you every been to Warren? The majority of Warren is blue collar - ranging from middle class (barely) to outright downtrodden.

And it was worse 20-30 years ago. As a true suburbanite (St. Clair Shores) - my parents blanched whenever we suggested we would be South of 9mile in Warren. Because - you noticed as soon as you came close to 8 mile. It was not a pleasant area. Maybe not as rough as Detroit, but not anything close to upper middle class...
