You will be fine on $700 a month. Wixom is pretty sleepy, though. Would imagine you will get to know Novi, Northville, and Plymouth pretty well. And heck, Ann Arbor isn't too far away.

To tell you the truth 700 in rent is actually going to be pretty hard if you live alone if you want a decent place in the suburbs, especially in Novi, Northville or Plymouth. I just helped a friend look for places and I don't remember anything around 700 in that area.

Metro D's rent prices are actually a lot higher than you think. It is much cheaper to just purchase a house.

The 700 or so is everything I have after rent, taxes and most other type of expenses.

Royal Oak is the happening place for young people. It has a nice downtown & is close to Detroit (one suburb away). If you are a city person, you won't mind some areas in Detroit, such as Midtown which is the epicenter for gentrifcation. The new light rail system being built next year will further living things up in that area which has Wayne State (a university), the cultural area, and the professional stadiums for the Lions and Tigers nearby. In addition, a new hockey arena is being built in that area. Belle Isle (a state park close to downtown in the middle of the river) is a cool park that has museums, a zoo, and a golf course if you like that.

Avoid areas like Rochester and Birmingham because they are pretty much suburban family life places. Ann Arbor is cool and fun but a bit too far from Detroit if that's where you'll be working. The commute would be a burden after awhile.

If you want to be near downtown:
-Downtown Detroit is at 98 % occupancy.
-Close to downtown, try the Midtown area near Wayne State University. Very safe area.
-Joseph Barry Subdivision, near the Mayor's Manoogian Mansion
-Corktown is on the bounce back

Other areas to consider:
Royal Oak
Ferndale
Madison Heights
Berkley
