That's true. I haven't been back in awhile...the city is changing.

$76k in Metro Detroit would be very good IMO. You could live very well in most areas on that salary.

I say Yes and look into Royal Oak/Ferndale or even other Woodward Corridor communities in Oakland County.

I'm still afraid to go forward with this opportunity though, simply because the city has a bad rep nationwide, and almost everyone that lives there, grew up there. Scary. Can you imagine telling people that you live in the Detroit area? The reactions people would make?

Most Detroiters don't have to imagine since they kind have to deal it. Actually, most people just go with saying they're from Southeast Michigan or from a certain suburb.

But really, what difference does bad rep make if it doesn't actually affect you in any way? If you've got friends that are judging you based on where you live, you've got some bad friends, I'm afraid.

Nep people tell people they are from the Detroit area all the time, and most of the reactions are "oh cool". The Detroit area is not a mystery to the rest of the country, seemingly only to those from CT for some reason.

Yes you are right. When I go to DC or NY and take Uber, most drivers ask me where I am from and when I say Detroit, they give me a shocking stare. One driver who could barely speak english kept on making a handgun with his hands and said mumbled something along the lines of "murder dangerous bankrupt."

Seriously, it sucks to tell people you are from Detroit but that doesn't really effect your every day life. I am not a fan of Detroit but that shouldn't be the reason why you don't want to come. Let the cold winters, lack of a large center city, lack of interesting restaurants or the crappy roads be the reason why you don't move here NOT because you have to tell other people you live in Detroit.

I've told people in Chicago, STL, other parts of MI, LA, Miami, Vegas, ect that I'm from Detroit. I honestly never got reactions, at least to my face. If you say your from MI most are going to think of the Detroit area anyway, trust me it happens everytime with people I know.

My question is, why is it that you care what others think? Someone who has the opportunity to make as much money as you and your sitting here debating on going or not you want it because your worried about what others think? Are you serious? How did you even get to where your at? I guarantee at least half of America would do the same thing for that kind of money. As someone else mentioned, there are worse reasons to decide not to move.

Well I don't know....I mean, I've read numerous reviews about Michigan and Detroit on another competing website (SBP), and the general idea is that it's a depressing, declining place to live and the population is actually decreasing. Yikes. But then, every few reviews are positive, with people saying that MI is a beautiful state (which I find hard to believe, for the southern portion) with nice, honest people.

Is the Detroit area really making a comeback? Or is that just wishful thinking? Is there any evidence of this actually happening? Will things only get better from here on? I really don't want to move to a place that is expected to decline in the coming years. That's depressing man.

Hey man, don't move then. No one's going to hold your hand to take the job offer. At some point your going to have to make a decision or else the company would probably just hire someone else and your feelings on the matter will become null. No sense and trying to base your whole decision on the opinion of others.

Just plan a 3 day visit or something. You can't grow if you don't move out of your comfort zone.
