Detroit Police Chief James Craig's contract extended 2 years

I'm pretty happy about it. He's been making efforts to get things done. I'll say that's a good move on the Mayor's part.

What do you think?

I think it's a great move too. Happy Chief Craig is staying on. I've been very impressed with his work!

Another yes. Fortunately, Detroit has been spared some of the highly publicized "civil unrest" that is occurring in other cities.

Yeah thank God. Although it's been a couple of times I almost worried we could be going the direction of Baltimore of Ferguson. But I think most situations were handled very well which kept people from getting out of hand.

He puts his foot in mouth sometimes

Detroit Police James Craig said he wouldn't stop at a gas station in the city overnight due to safety concerns

How is that "putting his foot in his mouth"? Seems like common sense to me. Along with:
  • Don't leave valuables in your car
  • Don't leave your car unlocked
  • Don't leave your car running
  • Don't invite strangers into your house to see what valuables you have that they can later break in and steal
  • Don't run across the street, especially at night or in the rain wearing dark clothing or if you have dark skin (i.e. less visible at night)
  • Proceed cautiously through stop signs as other drivers frequently fail to yield
  • Proceed cautiously when traffic light turns green as other drivers frequently run red lights
  • Don't go to ATMs after dark
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash in your wallet
  • Don't wear expensive jewelry or fancy clothing when walking around at night or if there aren't a lot of people around
  • Don't let your kids roam the streets at night or alone
If people would follow these and other simple common sense steps, the crime in Detroit would be a lot less.

I think he's saying he shouldn't say things like that if he's chief of police, I read somewhere else that he takes that statement back. I think honestly he was just trying to warn alot of people that it's not the smartest thing to do. Every once in a while I get gas at night in the city but only if the gas station seems busy enough or if I'm with some people. But I'm always armed and looking around while pumping at night. I will say though I get gas at night at the speedway downtown off of 375 often and I never feel unsafe there since it's always people around, well lit, and in a busy and generally safe area.

Good list btw, they need to sticky your list for everyone coming on this forum asking about safety.
