For some of us, that size is the ideal size for an entire meal.. not to mention the nutritional value of a protein bar is a little different from a candy bar.
Try looking at it from a business eye. What's your ROI on a Snickers candy bar? Now compare that with a Snickers protein bar.. the protein bar is always going to give you back more of everything, except for gluttonous pleasure of course..
Your average candy bar has a higher percentage of real ingredients than your average protein bar. I'd rather have greek yogurt and some almonds that any one of those super processed protein bars. In fact, if I am at the convenience store, I'd just grab some chocolate milk. Cheaper and better.
$3 for some plastic tasting food product doesn't have the ROI I am looking for.
I would rather have some fruit over a bar of any including the Cliff bars which I personally like. I'll buy some bannanas and frezze them it's like eating a frozen bannana popsicle. Very yummy! Apples are great I've heard you burn more calories to consume them then whats in them. Empty caolries I think it's called.

Empty calories is eating high sugar foods that have no nutritional value. I am not sure what its called when chewing the food takes more calories than the food has. I know celery is one of them though.
