The atypical (second generation) antipsychotics (some of which are used for treatment of depression) have some severe metabolic side effects, weight gain and decreased sensitivity to insulin being much more common, especially with clozapine and olanzapine. Risperdone and quetiapine have statistically less adverse affects then the first two and aripiprazole seems to have the least adverse metabolic effects amongst the atypicals.

Also bear in mind that people with major depression frequently experience anhedonia and anorexia and tend to lose weight as a result - antidepressants can cause an increase in appetite and a desire to eat again which would also contribute to weight gain.

The bottom line is anyone on neuroleptic meds needs to have a CBC (especially if on clozapine) and CMP done frequently, as well as A1C, lipids, and liver panels.

Well, I am on three meds that cause increased weight gain. They do not state increased appetite, they state increased weight gain, so I know how you feel.

I would imagine though, that if a med causes increased appetite, you may increase eating as well. Then, if you do not increase your activity, you gain weight.

It is an ordeal, I know. Sometimes, I cannot increase my activity, and sometimes, my level of activity is at zero.

Another website that is nice is called fitday dot com. It allows you to input everything you eat and how much, etc. You can put in your weight and it charts it for you. You can also take measurements and it will chart those. Your activity can be charted.

You can also make up your own foods on there as well, customize them. Lets say you just want to put, "cup of coffee" If you have your coffee the same every day, you can customize it. Put in 8 oz coffee and how many calories, etc, 2 tbsp half and half, and you can put its info, 2 splendas, and its info.

I have found this site to be helpful...

I gained like 5 pounds when I was on prednisone for hives(that still have not gone away). I was really upset. Anyway I'm working on trying to lose the weight now, and I've been off prednisone for a week.

Prednisone is evil. I swear, even if I did not eat bite I would STILL gain weight.
