5 Questions: Diet advice that goes against the grain - latimes.com

I love it when a cardiologist says the advice to eat more grains and cut out fat was bad advice. Instead, the heart doc says "Eat more fat. Eat as little grains as possible."

Right, you can find cardiologists that say much different things. Caldwell Esselstyn, and others, have been treating heart disease with low-fat diets for decades. The important question is, where are the studies? Can you point me to the research that Davis has conducted? Has he shown that eating fats and removing wheat will improve heart disease? Esselstyn, Ornish, etc all have published studies....

Even though its silly, I don't mind the "anti-grain" thing if it gets people eating less refined carbohydrates and that is the source of most people's grains. But for those that know the difference between a refined grain and a whole grain, well, its not helpful.

One thing I would agree with is that having a food pyramid (or the new myplate) that has "grains" as a category doesn't make much sense. Grains aren't essential foods, nor is dairy. Not to mention that the distinction between "vegetables" and "fruit" (as we use the words) is arbitrary...

Everything in moderation, smaller portion sizes. Avoid wheat if possible, particularly if you want to have greater mental clarity and energy.
