I am on thyroid meds and I have always been borderline anemic. When my doctor said I should start taking iron supplements I did. About two months in I noticed I had gained about 4 lbs. I started eating less and exercising more but I actually gained another 1 lb in a months time instead of losing. I went to an endocrinologist who told me I cannot take the iron pill and the thyroid pill at the same time because the iron pill interferes with the thyroid. Once I started taking them at different times of the day the 5 lbs I gained came off pretty fast.

I am supplementing iron and vitamin d at my doctors recommendation. I might have to do a celiac test as well. I have been having digestive issues recently. They are new to me.

I am overdue for some blood tests now. I've been traveling and slammed at work so I haven't had a chance to go but will in the next few days. It might be time to ditch my primary care physician for an endocrinologist. The past few months u switched back to branded medicine since it worked well before. But now I have new symptoms and other issues.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

Lucky - very interesting. I take iron and my thyroid at the same time - have been doing this for over 2 years and my thyroid and iron levels test normal with the supplements. Twice a week I take 2 iron supplements per day. I have lost well over 70 lbs. in the last 16 months so I don't quite understand taking iron/thyroid at different times or gaining weight but I'm not a doctor. I have heard that iron can make you hungrier - don't know if this is an old wife's tale or not....I guess people's metabolisms are all different.

I love the iron supplement I take: http://www.amazon.com/health-persona.../dp/B0010ZWIC2

It contains the vitamins and other things that promote iron absorption...the iron is mostly predigested liver so it does not cause constipation or stomach issues - it is great stuff and I highly recommend it.

Yes, I was kind of blown away. But he said they should not be taken together and he is a very highly regarded endocrinologist. And well, for me it worked.

I have heard the same. Calcium as well. And calcium and iron interfere.

On an autocorrecting iDevice.

Doing weight training must have a hormonal effect...I'm less menopausal (ovulating again...TMI). Wonder if it affects the thyroid as well (in a positive way).

The thyroid is not affected. If you have issues with your thyroid you need medication. I have wondered about menopause and exercise. I go at it pretty hard 4 to 5 days a week and have for years. I am 51 and no sign of menopause at all really.

You certainly are "lucky" if you don't have any sign of menopause at this point. I had a friend who still had regular periods at 56. A lot of this is probably genetic...my mom went through menopause at 47, and it took her only three months until she was done with it. (I found this strange, because she had her last child at 42...100% natural conception...she was very fertile.) I'm 48, and have not had a period since December last year. Once I started the weights a couple of weeks ago, I actually geared up to ovulate...am expecting a period again in about two weeks. It's as if my body got rejuvenated. So, yes, maybe the power of exercise (weight training) can even defy genetics to some extent. Isn't that too cool?
