How do obese people actually get enough tenacity to go to the gym? I've never been in a gym and probably would never step foot into one unless I looked like The Rock. Most people would probably get annoyed at fat people pretending to be body builders anyway

They don't need tenacity to go to the gym. They need the desire to no longer be obese. Most people don't get annoyed by what other people choose to do about their own health so long as it doesn't interfere with theirs.

One of the reasons to go to a gym is to - no longer be obese. The gym is where people exercise and become fit. How do you think those bodybuilders got started? They started out being something other than bodybuilders and worked their way up.

Also, most gyms aren't filled with bodybuilders. Most gyms are places like Fitness Palace, The Edge, LA Fitness, etc. etc. - places that feature zumba and yoga classes, tons of cardio, fitness machine circuits, "EZ-10 Weight Loss Workout" circuits, and oh yeah in the back corner they have free weights.

There are still gyms that cater to bodybuilders but you have to seek them out to find one. With the nationally (and regionally) known super-fitness-centers that stress "getting fit" as opposed to "lifting weights" you can find a few in every major city that has a thriving suburbia all across the country.

Nah, most gyms have all types. If you go to a place like the YMCA, you see fat people, skinny people, built people, people who think they're built, and even people with canes, walkers, and wheelchairs.

I'm on the fluffy side, and I go to the gym. No one gives me a second glance, except to comment on my folding cane!

They decide that their health is more important than worrying about what other people might think. To be honest the majority of people at a Gym are there for the same reasons. Seeing an overweight person who is there and working at it for most people is going to be inspiring. Only shallow people would think otherwise. And who cares what they think anyway?

I'm obese. I work out at an Aikido dojo. I show up for every class and work hard. Hard enough that I am my sensei's senior student and in a few weeks will take my black belt exam. Nobody looks at me and thinks I don't belong there. Mostly they see me as the example to be followed.

If you're self conscious about going to the gym, don't go to a gym. Make a playlist and put on some walking shoes and go for a walk around your neighborhood or the track at the high school. Get on youtube or buy some DVDs and do some workouts at home. Once you gain some confidence and feel better about your body and what it can accomplish, then change up your workout. Some fit people never go to a gym at all.

I get in the car, turn on the ignition, put the car in drive and drive to the gym. It's not that hard. Don't fall into the trap of thinking every obese person is lazy and never exercises. There are plenty of obese people who exercise regularly.

Does it matter? It's none of my business. When I go to the gym, I do my own thing.

Working out with a trainer helps a lot. Your trainer chooses the most appropriate equipment to begin on and teaches you to use it safely. Your trainer offers advice and encouragement. Pretty soon you are ready to do it with out him or her. And regulars tend to offer encouragement.

Just go.

Sounds like you have some personal issues that you need to work out. I am delighted to see obese people at my gym. They are there! They are trying!
And for the record - no one pretends to be a body builder. People lift weights to better their looks and health. Actual body builders do not have to pretend.

My trainer also did a grocery store tour with me. He met me at the store and we did the tour. He showed me the outer aisles where healthy things are, and asked me to show him things I typically buy. He showed me healthier alternatives.
