Hey folks,

I am just out here looking for a bit of advice. If anyone has any experience or expertise as to what I can do to help improve skin elasticity after some weight loss/fluctuation I would dearly appreiciate it.

For a bit of background on me and my situation, I am a 25 year old woman, Im about 5'1 and currently about 135 lbs. For a decent portion of my life Ive always been on the rounder side (fluctuating from around 145-160 at my heaviest).

About 2 years ago after hitting 160 and being quite unhappy with it I started working out and getting in shape and managed to drop 30 lbs.. but unfortunately due to my own laziness I ended up regaining most of it.

Fast forward to now, Ive once again gotten down to 135lb and I still want to lose about 15 more. This time around Im noticing that my skin has lost elasticity in a way I hadnt noticed last time and I have read the fluctuation can have that effect. This skin is loose fairly largely in my breasts, and minorly in my stomach and back region.

From what I have read, I understand that it is possible that it will firm up naturally, though it will take some time for skin to adjust.

Can anyone speak from experience whether this is true? and can anyone suggests techniques that have helped them speed up the process?

I know its not a quick fix.. Its mainly that I used to have a lovely chest and now Ive lost it and depsite my best efforts to stay positive, I am pretty bummed and insecure about it. I have read things about moisturing, dry brushing and collagen supplements, does anyone have experience with this? Is it too soon to be considering a breast lift?

Intermittent Fasting can help with extra skin - Google IF plus autophagy. Lifting weights and doing some toning exercises will firm up the muscles underneath the skin. That will also help. And time.

I don't know your age, but if you are younger, the skin can snap back over time. Provided you do NOT try to lose too quickly, or do the "yo-yo" thing. It also helps to firm up with some weight training.

Sad to say if you are over menopause you will mostly be stuck with looser skin.

Good luck!

You're 25, give it time. Exercise also helps. I'm 41, lost 60 lbs, after having two kids. Even now I've tightened up due to exercise but there is loose skin in the lower ab region that will probably be there for life at this point.

Hi Vye,
Congratulations on staying the course!!
Everyone regardless of age can have loss of elasticity/ collagen, in particular when their weight has fluctuated. There are no guarantees a person will or won't bounce back but after a certain period of time it's pretty clear and a dr can tell you for sure. Once a certain layer of skin has stretched beyond it's capacity to bounce back nothing will fix it, except for surgery. I have experience in this whole skin situation although my fluctuation was far more severe.

1. It may or may not firm up, there are ways to make it seem firmer such as strength training in particular which can give you contours and make the skin less noticeable. Then again if your skin elasticity is truly shot no amount of exercise will "fix it". Lotions and oils may make it look less dry but again can't penetrate the skin to the level the damage has occurred if it the elasticity is shot. A dermatologist and or plastic surgeon can advise you on whether your skin is likely to or not to recover.

2. Never let anyone force you into or against getting surgery if that is what you and your health care provider feel you want and need. I once listened to an anti-surgery exercise instructor brow beat a woman who has lost a massive amount of weight out of getting surgery to remove "bat wings", telling her if she just continued going to class they would go away. No chance, the woman was fit, had no fat on her arms and only surgery would get rid of that hanging empty skin.

If you have some fat still in your breasts, they can do a lift. If you have absolutely no fat and are really just sagging empty skin and nipple then you may need an implant along with the lift. Plastic surgeons can answer for sure but will want to see you- You can also take pics, not including your head (for privacy) and post on realself for doctors opinions.

Either way I'm very glad you are working out and hope you are happy with what you've accomplished.

NG

Apparently, people who lose weight with Intermittent Fasting don't need surgery to remove excess skin after weight loss. See:

Or see article:

The loose skin question: Surgery vs fasting
There is an increasingly popular idea that those skin folds may actually be catabolised naturally through a biological process acquired by evolution, and this process is fasting.

Those videos I posted are probably not the best ones. I was unable to find the one I wanted to post, but a young man lost a lot of weight and initially had loose skin but over time the action of autophagy ate up the loose skin. I think it said that loose skin is protein and in the course of IF, gets eaten up. Sounds gross, I know, but much more natural and safer than a $30,000 surgery.

The etiology of the word "autophagy" is self-eating.

Autophagy (or autophagocytosis) (from the Ancient Greek αὐτόφαγος autóphagos, meaning "self-devouring"[1] and κύτος kýtos, meaning "hollow"[2]) is the natural, regulated mechanism of the cell that disassembles unnecessary or dysfunctional components.[3]

I was concerned about this initially, as well, but after several months of OMAD, the areas I wanted to slim down are soft and dimply rather than hard fat, and I think my progress is moving in the right direction. It takes time.

It is certainly an interesting concept, but I think there are other ways to achieve the same result. I say this because 10 years ago I weighed nearly 200 lbs. Over time, I cleaned up my eating and started exercising more. I lost weight slowly, as I am not the type to go on "diets" per se. I never did any regular fasting, I occasionally would do OMAD once per week. Sometimes skip a meal (usually lunch) I am a 69 y.o. woman, many years past menopause, I exercise every day, I have lost over 50 lbs and maintained that loss and have very little loose skin. Of course at my age I am not tight and firm like a woman half my age , but honestly I get compliments all the time. I have good muscle definition. I do not do long hard workouts, just moderate daily workouts of things like cycling, dancing, body squats, walking lunges, rows and knee raises.

One thing I believe, especially if one is older, is that to avoid very loose excess skin you should lose weight SLOWLY, always working out. Sure worked for me.
