Our beagle/australian cattledog mix has one eye that "oozes" more than the other. In the morning this eye will have much more crud around it (and along the lids) than the other eye. Also, it tends to be pinker than the other eye. Anyone know what kind of problem this is, and if it's serious?
could be allergies ...... could be an eye infection.....
see what the vet says ...... although i will add this..... my davey-long-legs has allergies pretty much year round ...... runny, goopy eyes.... .but our now former vet kept insisting it was infections and we went through 3-4 rounds of antibiotics. oral and eye drops / eye ointment ...... before another vet said i could just give him an adult strength claritin every day..... has helped IMMENSELY....
My guess is that there's a foreign object lodged in, like dirt. Dogs sometimes have droopy lids which allow small things to get stuck and can scratch the eyeball. I'd have a vet look at him as, whatever the problem is, it's probably very irritating to him and he'd appreciate having it fixed.
The reason I don't suspect allergies is because it's just one eye. The eyes both look the same as far as size, pupils, he doesn't show any distress with it, doesn't blink more often or squint or anything. The discharge is gooey - just like the other eye but more of it. He's had pinkness in his eyes occasionally, but I do think this is mostly a recent issue. Yeah I guess I can go to the vet.....
Just a guess but could it be an inverted eyelash? It has a name but for the life of me I cannot remember it. Your vet would be able to do a more comprehensive exam.
Like above poster said it may be entropia. Eye lid is inverted and scratches and and can eventually cause blindness. Vet can fix easy enough if it is this I actually had 2 bloodhound pups like this and instead of cutting part of eyelid off she stitched it down. Pink eye would be other guess which is very contagious also.
