Reason I'm asking... we had problems with our dogs eating the dirt. For some strange reason they like the dirt where we live. Every dog we have had over the last 13 years will dig at the dirt and eat it. Were talking acres of area.
They eat very good dog food & enough of it
Dog cookies included, plus carrots & green beans.
Vet told us they might be missing some minerals in their diet, it can happen, even with dogs that are fed the correct foods.
We put our dogs on Probiotics...this medication has the good friendly bacteria that is totally beneficial for good health & supporting intestinal balance. This type of med. promotes a healthy immune system.
It helped our dogs.
I suggest you talk to your vet & see if this is something that would benefit your dog.
hi sillypups, thanks for your post. yes, actually, my dog's medical condition is a little complicated. right now he is testing a low postive for rocky mountain spotted fever, and he is testing irregularly for his kidneys. we're trying to isolate the kidney issue, and what has been diagnosed at this point is that his kidney problems are a secondary issue being caused by a gastric ulcer resulting from the previcox he's been on for the last three years for his arthritis. he also has a heart problem that he has been treated for for the last three years.
so...point? i'm trying to learn as much about gastric ulcers as possible to fix this issue so that we can get the kidney issue fixed as well.
complicated? yes. luckily, i do have a very good vet specialist to guide me through this, i was just hoping to find someone on the board who has dealt with a dog with an ulcer.

We've been thru cancer with everyone of our Rotts thru the years. That's a lot of Rotts & and even more cancers.
Our pups should never have to go thru these things.

barnaby is 12, and a shih tzu. he's a really fantastic dog, just getting a little older. i am so fortunate he picked me out and came to live with me when he was a 6-week old puppy...really, sometimes i ask myself how i got so lucky!
thank you so much for your good wishes! and i'm sorry to hear about your rotties...you're right, they shouldn't to go through all this bad stuff. when i sit beside b on the floor and look at him and know something just isn't right, i would do ANYTHING to fix it.
oh by the way, that visual of your dogs eating the dirt...well, let's just say, i really needed that laugh!

Poor guy has certainly had way more than a pup should have to go thru.
Small dogs do seem to live longer than big dogs. We hope ours live to at least 12 yrs. of age.
Our oldest Rott will be 10 in June. You can bet they will be having a party with yellow cupcakes with peanut buter on top for the frosting. You can imagine...that is a site to see.
Yes...everytime, especially the warm weather months, we would find a little hole of grass gone and tiny dirt holes, not quite deep enough to bury a tennis ball. We would know what ...or rather who made it. We gave up trying to correct them from digging. Once they looked up at us, and you see a big black bear nose all covered in dirt... lets just say we caved. How can you correct them when they give you "that look" with all that dirt on their noses.
We also gave up filling the holes in, cause if we did that, then they would just make new holes. At least if we knew where the old holes were at, we would dodge them, to keep from twisting an ankle.
Yep it's true...we admit it. Our dogs have us wrapped around their paws.

You are correct that it's not stress or anxiety, however smoking and diet have nothing to do with it either. Ulcers are caused by Helicobacter Pylori (H.Pylori), a bacterium. In 2005, 2 scientists discovered this and won the Nobel Prize as a result of that discovery. One of them actually infected himself with the bacterium to prove this, then took antibiotics to treat himself. Doctors need to start prescribing antibiotics to treat these bacterial infections instead of just allowing them to fester! This is the one case where antibiotics have proven to be efficient, since they are for bacterial infections. In a dog's case, Flagyl should do the trick.

Don't think the dog smokes! or has a bad diet as the owner is very careful.
And other things can cause ulcers besides H. Pylori. I recently went through a 2-months treatment for an ulcer that was caused most likely by my taking too many pills at once and one or more stuck to the side of my stomach.
But this is a DOG forum. Stick to topic - yes, I'm guilty, too.
