Okay, this is just something I've wondered and I tried Googling and my only conclusion is my dog is secretly channeling my parents form when I was a teen, haha. By the way, this is just a fun question, nothing serious.

She won't let me sleep in on weekends. I still wake up at our normal time of 6:30 am to let her out because she's used to it. I make sure she has a full food bowl and water at that time. Then I go back to bed.

Usually within an hour, she jumps in bed with me and cuddles (that's nice). But not too soon after that cuddling becomes licking and then she gets up and does this thing with her two front paws that makes the bed shake a little. If you've ever seen a video of a fox hunting in the snow, think something like that leap with the two front paws. If I dare move and she knows I am awake, she pounces on me and goes nuts! The only was to get her to stop is to get up, out of bed. By the time I take my shower and get dressed, she's curled up asleep, usually for a few hours until we go for our big morning walk.

It's like she just figures I am not supposed to be sleeping anymore and I should get up! Why does she do this? Probably no one here really knows so I guess I am really just curious if anyone else's dog channels an inner drill sergeant? And why do you think your dog does this?

My daughter gets to escape this torment because she keeps her bedroom door shut. My dog's bed is in my room, so shutting my door really won't help. haha

Probably wants attention. The dog is used to you being up and paying attention to her by a certain time, and she probably finds it odd that you're not.

Or, it's simply that she's like some people and figures if she's awake, you should be awake, doesn't occur to her that you might want more sleep...

You: "....It's like she just figures I am not supposed to be sleeping anymore and I should get up! Why does she do this? Probably no one here really knows so I guess I am really just curious if anyone else's dog channels an inner drill sergeant? And why do you think your dog does this?

I think it is this, although I will disagree with the word "channeling," at least in my own understanding of the word. I personally think she just knows you are home on the weekends, loves you dearly; and wants that extra time off you have to be spent with her. Animals are much smarter than some humans give them credit for.

Sounds like a wonderful dog

Maybe get her a wall calendar for Christmas so she'll know it's Saturday?

On weekdays you probably get up and leave on a daily schedule. So, once everyone's gone to work, school, etc., they are not around to provide company and attention. She knows the drill. On weekends you're not on this schedule, you're still home. She is taking advantage of the opportunity and wants your attention. Sleeping humans are boring.

She is a very loving dog. I just wish she'd let me sleep in. I mean, she goes back to sleep after all. haha

An yeah, maybe she needs a calendar or her own doggie smart phone to reminder her of weekends. I think those of you who mentioned a schedule are right. As I sit here now, it's a little past my bedtime. Guess who is bugging me to "go to bed."

Maybe give him a special treat on Saturday mornings after you let him out to potty and fill up his food bowl? We don't do rawhides but there are greenies and other type "chewies" that might keep him occupied. I wouldn't let him up on your bed because it sounds like he associates that with playtime. His bed and your bed should have the same meaning for him.

Maybe she doesn't want you to miss the Saturday morning cartoons? She probably can't understand why you're staying in bed instead of getting up and paying attention to her. Or maybe when you stay in bed she thinks something is wrong.
