Yesterday I found a crib mattress, in fairly good shape, next to a apartment complex dumpster. I still can't figure out WHY they dumped it? It had a small rip that was easily taped.

So I hauled it home for my little lap baby. Her little legs are only 4" tall, which made it the perfect height for her, and since she has arthritis hopefully she will prefer this instead of the floor.

And the crib mattress is the perfect size for my other dog, a 60 lb black lab mix.

Just in case you are wondering, I repaired it with tape, insecticide sprayed it, and wrapped it with several layers of plastic for precaution. I might add some eggcrate foam to make it softer - not sure yet?

You can buy a cheap new one at Wal-Mart. Babies only need cribs so long and you can't donate the mattress I believe so maybe that is why they got rid of it? But, I am glad that your pup has a nice and comfy bed now!

It wasn't dirty. The apt complex is just 1 block from my house, and it's NOT some ghetto place. It's a crib mattress with a washable surface. Little bleach cleaner does wonders. I insecticide sprayed it 1st, then covered it with multiple layers of plastic.

A buddy of mine brought bedbugs home into his very clean, recently moved-in apartment, from a vacation he took over the weekend in Vermont. For a 25-30$ item I wouldn't risk it, but that's just me...

Actually there is a spray you can get that will kill bedbugs. But you might have to get it from the exterminator. OR you could put an encasement on them. We did that for our mattresses. They sell crib sized encasements at Buy Buy Baby. It's still a bit cheaper than buying a new mattress. But anyway, I've been told that crib mattresses are usually safe because they are vinly covered already, so unless it has rips it should be okay.

Course, a crib mattress is pretty big, so unless you have a full sized dog, doesn't it take up a lot of room? Even Shep's oversized crate takes a smaller footprint.
