I don't mean to politicize this story, but I only heard it today on the radio and I was wondering if anyone knew if he was ever charged with animal cruelty and if not, WHY NOT? This story is disgusting and while it happened so long ago, I wonder how many others like myself have never heard it until recently?
Well, I don't know the entire situation. But does that mean everyone who has crated a dog, is an animal abuser? And I have crated our dogs, put them in the pick-up bed, and gone on trips, does that make me a bad dog owner? Jasper was crated for an entire cross country trip, he is a cat...should I have been hauled off by "Animal Cops"?
With all due respect to the OP, yes, you did mean to politicize this issue, as did the media trying to make it an issue today.
This was 23 years ago. There is a thread in the Politics section of the CD forum. Show me an example of a POTUS candidate currently abusing a dog and you might get me to take the bait. However, this dog was a well loved family dog and has been dead and gone longer than the time it spent on this earth.
I haven't heard about this, just what you wrote in your post. And from what you wrote, the problem isn't with the crating, it's the crating ON TOP OF THE CAR. That just seems dangerous, and I would imagine that the velocity of the wind going by at 60mph with nothing to block it like the cab of the truck when in the bed of the truck, might be detrimental to the physical or emotional health of the animal.
But again, those are just my thoughts based on what you typed only.
As a new pet owner, I'm looking at this from a different perspective that's all. Don't read into it as then it takes away from the topic of dog safety.

I remember the hoopla about this years ago. As I recall it was a sturdy dog crate, the dog was in no danger and the crate was secure on the top of the car. Would I do it, 23 years ago or now? No Way but this is old news and to bring it up now makes no sense.
The dog seemed to be suffering as was reported there was "brown stuff" leaking down the rear window of the car. As I wrote earlier, this is the first time I saw this so I am shocked by his treatment of his doggie, but I do find it inappropriate. Roof tops of cars are for luggage, not loving members of your family. The pet owner showed poor judgement way back then that is not excused over time.
From what I read, PETA condemned the action of the pet owner, too.

In all fairness, I think Skatergirl brought it up now because it was just splashed all over the news recently. I didn't know about it 23 years ago so it was certainly news to me.
He stopped and washed off the diarrhea but did not bring the dog into the car. I think it shows a lack of compassion and it should warn others of doing the same stupid thing.
